ATHENS, Ohio – In their first game back from a 14-day quarantine, the Ohio Bobcats defeated the visiting Akron Zips, 90-73, ending the Zips four-game winning streak on Tuesday afternoon at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio.

Senior Loren Cristian Jackson (Chicago, Ill.) led Akron in scoring with 22 points, a team-best seven rebounds and four assists, while sophomore Mikal Dawson (Huntington, W.Va.) followed with 11 points and four rebounds.

Ohio (12-6, 8-4 MAC) started the scoring and led the entire game as the Bobcats established a 5-4 lead at the first media break, 15:49. Ohio followed with a 3-point field goal from top of the key for an 8-4 advantage, and junior Michael Wynn (Albany, N.Y.) answered for Akron (14-5, 12-4 MAC) with a jumper in paint, but back-to-back threes from Ben Vander Plas and Jalen White pushed the Bobcat advantage to 14-6 with 13:12 left in first half.

Jackson buried trifecta form top of the key, but the Bobcats used seven unanswered points to take a 23-9 lead. The Zips responded with a 9-0 run of their own as Jackson completed an old fashioned 3-point play and junior Bryan Trimble, Jr. (Kansas City, Mo.) and Dawson delivered back-to-back triples. After a pair of Jackson free throws, Trimble and Dawson hit from deep again, but the Bobcats continued to answer, taking 41-32 lead into halftime.

At the midpoint, Ohio was shooting 70-percent from deep, connecting with 7-of-10 first-half 3-pointers. The Bobcats long range attack accounted for half of the field goals made in the opening half, finishing 14-of-29 (.483). The Zips shot 31.4 percent from the floor (11-of-35) and 27.3 percent from long range (6-of-22).

After the break, Ohio opened with a 6-0 run as Vander Plas scored all six points. Jackson stopped the run with a reverse layup, 47-34, and finished in the lane two more times before Ohio touched the scoreboard again, 52-38.

Two teams traded buckets as Ohio held on to a double-digit advantage and increased the lead to as many as 22 points before time expired.
