AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams continues its indoor campaign this weekend as the Zips travel to Kent State to participate in the Doug Raymond Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Kent State Field House.
UP NEXT: The Doug Raymond Invitational will commence at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13 with the men's weight throw and the women's high jump, long jump, shot put and triple jump. Running events get underway at 2 p.m. with the women's 5,000 meters and run through the men's 4x400 relay at 5:55 p.m.
The Zips will go against a four-team field which includes; Akron, Ashland, Kent State and Youngstown State.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams has garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2021 indoor season as the Zips are rated in the Event Squad rankings released on Feb. 8, 2021 as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
Akron is ranked sixth nationally in the men's triple jump and among the top 20 in five different events.
The Zips also rated seventh in the men's weight throw, eighth in the men's long jump, 13th in the men's pole vault and 17th in the women's 800 meters.
The Akron men and women rank second and seventh, respectively, in the Great Lakes Regional polls.
The Zips' men's squad ranked No. 4 in the final Collegiate Indoor Dual Meet Rankings in 2020 as compiled by Jesse Squire for Track and Field News.
ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2021 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron has five student-athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) during the 2021 indoor campaign, including junior Nuh Andu (Doha, Qatar), who is 16th in the nation in the men's high jump (7-0.25/2.14m).
Also rated among the top-25 is senior Brandon Hochbein (18th in the men's heptathlon – 5,297), sophomore Zarik Brown (Dayton, Ohio) (24th in the men's 400 meters – 46.96), freshman Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) (24th in the men's pole Vault – 17-0.75/5.20m) and redshirt junior Abby Helminiak (Toledo, Ohio) (25th in the women's pole Vault – 13-4.65/4.12m)
A WEEK AGO: The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams capped another impressive weekend of individual results garnering 15 victories as part of 45 overall top-five performances to conclude the 17th Annual Akron Invitational - Celebrating Diversity at the Stile Athletics Field House on Saturday, Feb. 6.
Sparked by strong second-day marks, Brandon Hochbein defended his men's heptathlon title registering a career-best seven-event cumulative score of 5,297 to edge Kent State's Jacob Malley by 23 points.
Hochbein opened day two of the men's heptathlon posting a career-best time of 8.34 in the 60-meter hurdles. He followed registering the top mark in the pole vault with a clearance of 15-3 (4.65m), before crossing the line in a career-best time of 2:52.68 in the 1,000 meters to close out the competition.
Junior Sara Foster (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) nearly defended her title in the women's pentathlon falling three points shy of Buffalo's Scilla Benussi after registering a five-event cumulative score of 3,552.
Foster opened her competition winning the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 9.30, before tying for the top mark in the high jump besting the bar at 5-3.75 (1.62m).
Foster followed with a career-best mark of 32-11.75 (10.05m) in the shot put, before adding a mark of 17-0.50 (5.19m) in the long jump.
She capped her efforts with a strong performance in the 800 meters posting a time of 2:21.77.
Senior Hesham Eldesouky (Nasr City, Egypt) won his second event of the weekend taking top honors in the men's triple jump with a mark of 50-3.25 (15.32m), while sophomore Dimitrije Novakovic (Belgrade, Serbia) placed second with a jump of 48-0 (14.63m).
Junior Kyra Keurentjes (Wehl, The Netherlands) and freshman Beth Arentz (Cronulla, Australia) each registered career-best times in the women's 800 meters as the Zips' duo took the top-two spots crossing the line in 2:10.33 and 2:12.68, respectively.
Junior Zoi Balamouti (Heraklion, Greece) took the title in the women's triple jump with a mark of 38-5.50 (11.72m).
Zarik Brown crossed the line first in the men's 400 meters in a time of 49.96.
Nuh Andu placed second in the men's high jump with a mark of 6-11.75 (2.13m), while senior Jacob Ondash (Hiram, Ohio) finished second in the men's 3,000 meters in a time of 8:39.50.
The men's 4x400 relay team of freshman Jameel Williamson (Columbus, Ohio), junior Amir Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio), senior Marquis Evans and Brown recorded a season-best time of 3:13.48 to place first.
The women's 4x400 relay team of freshman Janay Bass (Akron, Ohio), Keurentjes and freshmen Sage Harmon (Bloomsburg, Pa.) and Fegor Clifford (Delta State, Nigeria) finished second in an Akron season-best time of 3:51.72.
In opening-day competition, Willis triumphed in the men's 60 and 200 meters, respectively. He posted the No. 4 all-time time in indoor program history in the men's 200 meters crossing the line in 21.14, while equaling his own No. 5 mark in the 60 meters with a time of 6.73.
Senior Lindsey Scarton (Berea, Ohio) added the No. 5 mark in women's indoor program history winning the women's 5,000 meters in a career-best time of 17:20.42.
Sophomore William Gross (Newfane, N.Y.) placed second in the men's weight throw with a career-best mark of 63-6.75 (19.37m).
Junior Jacqueline Pokuaah (Akron, Ohio) won the women's long jump with a mark of 19-2.75 (5.86m), while placing second in the women's 60-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 8.74.
Arentz captured the women's mile in a career-best time of 4:50.92.
Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) won the men's pole vault eclipsing 16-10.75 (5.15m).
In his 2021 debut, Eldesouky captured the men's long jump with a mark of 23-10.75 (7.28m), while sophomore Haruki Sakai (Katori, Japan) placed second with a jump of 23-4.75 (7.13m).
Abby Helminiak equaled the top mark in the women's pole vault eclipsing 13-6.25 (4.12m) to place second.
In the men's mile, Ondash crossed the line second in a career-best time of 4:08.67.
A YEAR AGO: Amir Willis captured the men's 60 meters with a career-best time of 6.80 to lead the efforts of the Zips' Track and Field team on the final day of the Doug Raymond Invitational hosted by Kent State on Feb. 15, 2020.
Willis headlined the field in the men's 60 meters after running a time of 6.92 in the semifinal round. Junior Malcom Briley (Pickerington, Ohio) finished fourth in 6.88.
Maike Anstett earned a third-place showing in the women's triple jump with a mark of 39-6.50 (12.05m).
Redshirt sophomore Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) placed third in the men's 400 meters on the strength of a career-best time of 48.82.
