AKRON, Ohio - University of Akron rifle senior Jeanne Haverhill (Coopersburg, Pa.) garnered national recognition for her efforts in the air rifle at the recently completed 2021 Rifle Winter Airgun National Championships, Dec. 8-12, held in Camp Perry, Ohio and Anniston, Alabama.
The 2021 Rifle Winter Airgun National Championships is sponsored by USA Shooting, the national governing body for Olympic competitions in the United State. This is one of the few matches held in the United States in which medal winners can earn points towards qualifying for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
The competition consisted of three days of matches with a qualification match each day. The top-eight qualifiers each day advanced to an Olympic final to determine the top-three medal winners. At the finals, the top-eight competitors start from a score of zero and fire a course of fire which will, one by one eliminate finalists, until the last three standing battle for bronze, silver and gold medals. Haverhill's performances earned her a spot in the finals each of the three days and ultimately a medal following each of the days.
On the fourth day of the event, competitors battled to earn qualifying points for the 2024 Olympic squad. The day began with a women's final and men's final event. When the women's final was completed, Haverhill stood as the bronze medal winner for this national and Olympic qualification event.
Once the women's and men's finals finished, USA shooting introduced a three-person team event. Any three competitors could form a team and fire a special course of fire including elimination rounds. The exciting team finale landed Haverhill, rifle alum Kera Kaufman, and CMP staff member Chance Cover standing on the gold medal podium.
On the strength of her efforts at the championships, Haverhill is rated ninth in the United States in the air rifle in the latest USA Air Rifle Shooting Rankings.
Haverhill and the 13th-rated University of Akron rifle team is set to return to competition on Jan. 15 at No. 10 Nebraska.
