AKRON, Ohio –Akron head men's basketball coach John Groce announced Tavari Johnson signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Zips basketball family and don the blue and gold for the 2022-23 season on Wednesday.
Â
"We target skilled players that will impact our program during their time at Akron, and Tavari not only checks that box, he exceeds those expectations in several other areas," Groce said. "He is an extremely hard worker with a high basketball IQ. Tavari has elite vision and court presence with exceptional passing ability, allowing him to be an elite pick n' roll player."

He averaged 16.6 points, four rebounds, 3.5 assists, and two steals per game as a junior for the Lions while being named the 2020-21 team's most valuable player. Johnson led the Lions to an 11-6 overall record while being named to the All-West Suburban Conference team as well.
Â
"Tavari is a vocal leader and developes great chemistry with his teammates. He is a high-level defender and is always looking to elevate his game and the others around him."
Â
Akron will host Point Park for its 2021-22 home opener at James A. Rhodes Arena on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. Fans can follow the action via live stats on GoZips.com or by Akron Sports Radio network on WHLO 640 AM.
