CLEVELAND, Ohio – For the second consecutive week, senior guard Loren Cristian Jackson (Chicago, Ill.) was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Â
Jackson led the Zips to a 2-0 start in league play with 31 points and six assists en route to defeating Akron's archrival Kent State on New Year's Day, 66-62. With the win, Akron gained a half point for the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge.
Â
Jackson scored Akron's first 16 points of the game, firing away from deep to help keep his squad close before the rest of the Zips found their stride. He buried 9-of-23 shots from the field, including an impressive 50 percent showing from deep. Jackson drained seven triples and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Jackson added a pair of rebounds and a steal in the winning effort.
Â
The first Akron basket by someone other than Jackson came with 5:12 left in the opening half, when Camron Reece drained a short jump hook moving across the lane, drawing a foul in the process.
Â
The Zips are 4-1 overall and 2-0 in MAC play, as Jackson leads the league in scoring (25.4 pts/g), assists (8.0 ast/g), 3-point field goals made per game (3.8 3pt fg/g) and assist/turnover ratio 3.64 with 40 assists and 11 turnovers to date.
Â
Akron will once again have a break of more than a week between games as the Zips must wait eight days to get back into action, traveling to Ypsilanti, Mich. to face Eastern Michigan in a contest that was postponed four days and will tip off Jan. 9 at 2 p.m., with the broadcast to be heard on WHLO 640-AM.
