MORGANTOWN, W.VA. - The 12th-rated University of Akron rifle squad competed in a unique four-team match on Saturday, Jan. 30, as No. 3 Ole Miss, No. 4 West Virginia and No. 14 Navy went head-to-head with the Mountaineers coming out on top followed by the Rebels, Zips and Midshipmen.

The Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) is recognized as the largest and one of the toughest rifle conferences in the nation. The nine-member league has most of its teams facing off one at a time throughout the season, but similar to most sports, this season has presented its own unique set of challenges. Originally slated to be a head-to-head match between Akron and Ole Miss, both West Virginia and Navy sought an opportunity to create this unique showdown.

Freshman Kayla Andreoli (Washington, Pa.) led the squad with a two-rifle aggregate score of 1166, while posting a team-best 580 score out of the possible 600 in the smallbore. She was in good company as seven of her fellow teammates registered scores of 570 or better.

Freshman Gavin Perkowski (Bolivar, Ohio) headlined Akron in the air rifle by earning 591 points. Senior Wyatt Openshaw (Parkton, Md.) contributed a 590 score, along with eight fellow Zips scoring 580 or better.

Sophomore Jakob Rankin (Granbury, Texas) had a strong day establishing career-best marks in the smallbore (577), air rifle (585) and two-rifle aggregate (1162).

The Zips will host UTEP on Friday, Feb. 5, before encountering No. 6 Nebraska in a virtual match on Saturday, Feb. 6, and traveling to Columbus to battle No. 7 Air Force and No. 13 Ohio State in a three-team match on Monday, Feb. 8.

The UTEP match will be a home coming for head Coach Austin Litherland, who was a member of the Akron rifle team (2011-12) before serving as a graduate assistant coach for the Zips for two years.
