Zips Commence Indoor Campaign Hosting Akron Quad Meet

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams open their 2021 indoor campaigns this Friday as the Zips welcome Buffalo, Eastern Michigan and Kent State to the Stiles Athletic Field House for a quad meet on Friday, Jan. 15.
 
The 28-event meet will kick off with the women's pole vault and weight throw in addition to the men's high jump and long jump at 5 p.m. The 16-event running competition commences with the men's mile at 6 p.m. before the women's 4x400 relay closes action at 8:40 p.m.
The meet will be scored as a quad meet: 9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 (Individual Events, 2 score per team) 9-7-6-5 (Relay Events, 1 score per team).

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2020 indoor season as the Zips were rated in the Event Squad rankings released on March 3, 2020 as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
 
Akron ranked third nationally in the men's triple jump and among the top 20 in six different events.
 
The Zips also rated sixth in the men's heptathlon, seventh in the men's 400 meters, eighth in the men's 200 meters, 16th in the men's long jump and 20th in the men's pole vault.
 
The Akron men and women ranked fifth and ninth, respectively, in the Great Lakes Regional polls.
 
The Zips' men's squad ranked No. 4 in the final Collegiate Indoor Dual Meet Rankings as compiled by Jesse Squire for Track and Field News.
 
ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2020 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron had five student-athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) during the 2020 indoor campaign, including Lucy Bryan, who was third in the nation in the women's pole vault (14-9.50/4.51m).
 
Also rated among the top-25 was Demetrius Jackson (Ninth in the men's 200 meters – 20.75), Noah Williams (14th in men's 400 meters – 46.13/22nd in men's 200 meters – 20.89) and Abby Helminiak (Toledo, Ohio) (24th in the women's pole vault – 13-9.75/4.21m) and Hesham Eldesouky (25th in the men's triple jump – 52-2/15.90m).
 
CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips posted a pair of school records as part of 23 overall top-five performances in program history during the 2020 indoor campaign.
 
A YEAR AGO: Demetrius Jackson won three events en route to posting a pair of top-five marks in indoor program history to headline the Zips' efforts in a pair of dual-meet victories past Central Michigan on Jan. 17, 2020, at the Stile Athletics Field House.
 
The Zips combined to win 20 events on the evening, while placing second in an additional 21 to best Central Michigan in the men's and women's competitions, respectively. Akron also garnered 59 career-best performances.
 
In the men's dual meet, Akron bettered the Chippewas, 100-46, while the Zips' women's squad edged Central Michigan, 84-64.
 
Jackson registered the then third-fastest time in indoor program history in the men's 200 meters crossing the line first in 21.25, while posting the then fifth-best performance in the 60 meters with a time of 6.76. Additionally, he ran the third leg on the victorious men's 4x400 relay squad of junior Amir Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio), Noah Williams, Jackson and sophomore Zarik Brown (Dayton, Ohio) that crossed the line in 3:14.24.
 
The Zips also garnered top-five program marks in the men's 400 meters and mile, respectively, as Williams recorded the then No. 2 time, 46.98, in the 400 meters, while Marc Migliozzi added the then No. 5 time, 4:07.42, the men's mile.
 
Lucy Bryan recorded a mark of 14-6 (4.42m) en route to winning the women's pole vault, while senior Matt Keim (Bollivar, Ohio) posted the triumph in the men's pole vault eclipsing 16-7.50 (5.07m).
 
Junior Lizzy Gurko (Northfield, Ohio) opened the evening for the Zips' women's squad winning the women's mile in a time of 5:04.14.
 
Dimitra Gnafaki captured the women's 400 meters in a time of 58.17, while running the opening leg of the winning women's 4x400 relay team of Gnafaki, Iman Batiste, junior Sara Foster (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and Bailey Lack, which crossed the line in 4:00.80.
 
Haley Hess finished first in the women's 3,000 meters in a time of 9:55.73.
 
Maike Anstett claimed a triumph in a jump-off to earn the victory in the women's high jump with a mark of 5-3.25 (1.61m).
 
Junior Kassandra Roemer (Kaiserlautern, Germany) capped Akron's women's first-place efforts winning the women's long jump with a mark of 18-4.25 (5.59m).
 
Senior Patrick Kimball (Pittsburgh, Pa.) placed first in the men's 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.11, while sophomore Blake Lucius (Crestline, Ohio) won the men's 800 meters in a time of 1:53.66.
 
In a time of 8:42.15, senior Andre Bollam-Godbott (Brunswick, Ohio) placed first in the men's 3,000 meters.
 
Junior Nuh Andu (Doha, Qater) bested the bar at 6-7 (2.01m) to win the men's high jump.
 
Senior Hesham Eldesouky (Nasr City, Egypt) capped the winning efforts with a mark of 49-1.75 (14.98m) in the men's triple jump.
