Akron Golf Back in Action at 23rd Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate

AKRON, Ohio -Â The University of Akron men's golf team will return to action on Monday and Tuesday, March 9-10, for the 23rd annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by South Carolina Aiken in Aiken, S.C.

"The Srixon/Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate is such a great event, and one we look forward to every year," head coach David Trainer said. "To have the support of a company like Srixon/Cleveland Golf and up to be able to compete on a golf course like Palmetto is a real treat for not only our guys, but for the entire field. This course tests every part of your game. I look forward to getting out to the course and making out our game plan."

The 54-hole event will be played at the Palmetto golf course, a par-70 course that spans 6,617 yards. The 15-team field includes host South Carolina Aiken, Akron, Army West Point, Charleston Southern, Clemson, Francis Marion, Furman, Memphis, Presbyterian, Samford, Temple, Virginia, VCU, Winthrop and Wofford.

The tournament will format will be a shotgun start for both days beginning at 8:30 a.m. with continuous play through 36 holes on Monday and final 18-hole round on Tuesday. Fans can follow the action with GolfStat Live Scoring.

The Zips' starting five includes, senior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio), junior Fabian Sunden (Sweden) sophomore Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio), sophomore Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain) and freshman Braden Smith (Smithville, Ohio).

Last season, Akron completed the 54-hole event with an 887 (+47) and 13th overall.  No. 37 ranked South Carolina secured the team title in record-breaking fashion, setting the all-time low team score of 23-under par. The Gamecocks won the tournament by 35 strokes with a 268-269-276 - 813 (-27) tournament tally and placed four golfers in the Top 5 as Will Miles claimed individual honors, 64-65-68 – 197 (-13). Ryan Stachler and Scott Stevens tied for runner-up with 4-under scores and Caleb Proveaux tied for 5th at 3-under.

Last year, Elliott Grayson led the Zips' scoring efforts with a Top 25 finish, landing tied for 21st overall with a 6-over par 216 tournament total.  Puente followed with a 78-73-72 – 223 (+13), while McFarland, (+14, 224), Bayerl (+17, 227) and Sunden (+25, 235) finished the Zips scoring.

The Zips are coming off a 11th place finish at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate. The Zips finished the 54-hole tournament with a 305-295-306 – 906 (+42) at the Wexford Plantation Course, a par 72 Arnold Palmer signature course that measures 6,913 yards in length.
