Akron Tennis Grabs 4-3 Win at Cleveland State

CLEVELAND – The University of Akron women's tennis team returned to action on Wednesday, claiming a 4-3 victory at Cleveland State at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.

The Vikings (8-4 overall) claimed the doubles point, winning all three matches.

The Zips (2-5 overall) jumped on the winning track in singles action, grabbing wins at the first four spots. In the match that clinched UA's win, sophomore Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico) went three sets to beat Klara Mrcela, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6, at No. 1.

At No. 2, junior Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) beat Lara Prosenjak in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.

At No. 3, senior Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) defeated Blanche Lenoan in straight sets, 6-2 6-1.

At No. 4, junior Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) battled Kate Avram, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, for the win.

"A great win against a tough Cleveland State team," interim head coach Brian Peters said. "We had several battles that could have gone either way. I'm really proud of how our team fought together today. We are looking to build on this moving towards the weekend. Even though she can up just short, it's fantastic to see how well Aliona (Kruglov) is developing!"

Akron continues road action this week. The Zips visit Marshall on Saturday, March 7, for a 1 p.m. match at the Huntington Tennis Club.
