Akron Tennis Battles Marshall to 4-3 Decision

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The University of Akron women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 battle at Marshall on Saturday afternoon at the Huntington Tennis Club.

The Thundering Herd (9-4 overall) claimed the doubles point, winning all three matches.

The Zips (2-6 overall) captured three singles wins. At No. 2, junior Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) defeated. Daniela Dankanych, 7-6 (2), 7-5.

At No. 4, junior Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) beat Jutte Van Hansewyck in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

At No. 6, freshman Tanja Derowski (Bruckmuehl, Germany) defeated Madison Riley, 6-3, 6-3.

"What a battle!" interim head coach Brian Peters said. "Hats off to Marshall for playing a great match. We had our chances on courts 1 and 2 in doubles but came up a hair short. Our fight, spirit, and overall match play today were incredibly tough. I am proud of our team for committing to getting better every match! It's a fun year and we are moving forward!"

Akron travels to Ithaca, N.Y., next weekend to face Cornell and Binghamton on March 13 and 14.
