Men’s Golf Opens Spring Season at the 15-Annual Wexford Intercollegiate

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's golf team opens the spring season with the 15th-annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 24-25, hosted by Francis Marion University on Hilton Head Island.
"Preparation for our spring season has gone well," head coach David Trainor said. I've seen discipline and hard work, and now it comes down to execution. If we can execute the type of golf we're capable of, it will be a lot of fun to watch and be a part of. GO ZIPS."
The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Wexford Plantation course, an Arnold Palmer signature course, measures 6,913 yards and is a par 72 layout. On Monday, the 18-team field is scheduled to play 36 holes, leaving the final 18 holes for Tuesday. Both days will begin with shotgun starts at 8:15 a.m. Fans can follow the action via GolfStat Live Scoring.
The field includes host Francis Marion, Akron, Augusta, Charleston Southern, Cleveland State, Cornell, Dartmouth, Davidson, Dayton, Furman, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Presbyterian, Radford, Temple, USC Aiken, Winthrop and Wofford.
Akron's five-man lineup includes senior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio), junior Fabian Sunden (Sweden), junior Kaleb Smith (Mansfield, Ohio), sophomore Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio) and freshman Braden Smith (Smithville, Ohio).
In four fall tournaments, Akron averaged a 297.1 team stroke total per round. Akron tallied 4th-place and 7th-place finishes at the Firestone Invitational and ODU/OBX Intercollegiate, respectively. In addition, the Zips landed 10th and 15th at the Dayton Flyer Invitational and Mountaineer Intercollegiate.
The Zips are coming off the successful fall season led by Sunden's team-low 72.75 stroke average. Sunden captured the Zips first-ever individual championship at the Firestone Invitational and delivered three Top 25 finishes. In 12 rounds, Sunden fired six rounds of par or better, including a 66 (-6), and 66 (-5) scores.
Kaleb Smith and McFarland follow with 73.83and 74.58 stroke averages, respectively. Smith played six rounds with two rounds of par or better 72 (E) and 71 (E), while McFarland owned one Top 25 performance with three rounds of par or better and a 67 (-5) and a pair of 69 (-2) ledgers. Bayerl completed two tournaments with sub-par scores, 215 (-1) and 211 (-2), and two Top 25 performances en route to a 75.75 stroke average. Braden Smith tallied a 75.92 stroke average with a 70 (-1) low round and 213 (E) tournament totals.
Last year, Charleston Southern carded the low team round (278) of the tournament on the final day to rally and post a four-stroke win over second-place Furman.
The Buccaneers claimed the 2019 Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Tournament title with a 54-hole tally of 12-over-par 876. Brad Bawden of Memphis shot a final-round 70 to earn medalist honors by one stroke over High Point's Brandon Einstein. Bawden finished at 4-under-par 212.
TCU's Stefano Mazzoli earned individual medalist with 70-72-65 – 206 (-10) scores and Georgia's David Thompson was runner-up with a 67-72-69 – 208 (-8) ledger.
Gardner-Webb won the 2017 title, while Wofford captured the 2015 championship. USCA previously won the 2014, 2006, and 2009 tournaments. Other past winners include TCU (2018), Campbell University (2016), Elon University (2008) Georgia Southern University (2013), Georgia State University (2012), Indiana University (2011), Wake Forest University (2010), and the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga (2007).
