Akron Tennis Gets First Win with 7-0 Sweep of Seton Hall

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team recorded its first win of the season with a 7-0 sweep of Seton Hall on Friday at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.

The Zips (1-4 overall) claimed the doubles point. At the No. 1, junior Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) and senior Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) defeated Minja Gligic and Hiba El Khalifi, 6-2. The No. 3 doubles team won by default as Seton Hall (1-4 overall) did not field a doubles team.

"In doubles it was a split evaluation today. On one court we managed to play aggressively and minimize energies, but just the opposite on the other," interim head coach Brian Peters said. "We will work hard on that in practice tomorrow. In singles I was very proud of how hard we fought. Seton Hall competes very well and it was a great test for our team. Go Zips!"

In singles action, UA captured wins at every spot. At No. 1, sophomore Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico) beat Gligic in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.

At No. 2, Vasilescu defeated Michal Matson, 6-1, 6-2.

At No. 3, Pedroso took care of Aina Palana Ventosa, 6-3, 6-2.

At No. 4, junior Jemi Aguilar (Weston, Fla.) defeated El Khalifi, 7-6, 6-4.

At No. 5, freshman Tanja Derowski (Bruckmuehl, Germany) beat Anniek Jansen, 6-3, 6-4.

Seton Hall will face West Virginia (4-0 overall) on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 9 a.m. at LaTuchie.

On Sunday, Feb. 16, Akron hosts West Virginia at 10 a.m. at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.
