AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams travels to University Park, Pa., this weekend as the Zips compete at the Penn State National on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
UP NEXT: The two-day meet will commence at 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31 with the women's weight throw competition. The meet will conclude on Saturday, Feb. 1, with the women's 400 meters getting action underway at 10:20 a.m. before field events are scheduled to start at 12 p.m. with the women's high jump.
The Zips will go against a 33-team field which includes; Akron, Army, Ashland, Binghamton, Bucknell, Buffalo, Duquesne, Findlay, Georgetown, Guelph, Hampton, Indiana (Pa.), Indiana Tech, James Madison, La Salle, Maryland, Mount St. Mary's, Norfolk State, Otterbein, Penn State, PSU-Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Pitt Johnstown, Richmond, Rider, Saint Francis, Shippensburg, Towson, UMBC, Penn, West Virginia, William and Mary and Youngstown State.

THIS WEEK IN AKRON TRACK AND FIELD WITH HEAD COACH DENNIS MITCHELL:
NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams garnered recognition for their efforts during the outdoor season as the Zips' women's squad ranked 48th in the final 2019 United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Division I Women's Outdoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
The Zips' men's and women's squads were the highest-rated teams in the MAC, while the men's and women's squads were ranked No. 19 and No. 23, respectively, in the final Collegiate Outdoor Dual Meet Rankings as compiled by Jesse Squire for Track and Field News.
The Akron men and women also ranked seventh and 12th, respectively, in the Great Lakes Regional polls.
ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2020 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron has three student-athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) during the indoor campaign, including senior Lucy Bryan (Bristol, England), who is third in the nation in the women's pole vault (14-7.25/4.45m).
Also rated among the top-25 is redshirt sophomore Noah Williams (Hilton, N.Y.) (12th in men's 400 meters – 46.98) and redshirt junior Abby Helminiak (Toledo, Ohio) (25th in the women's pole vault – 13-5/4.09m).
CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips garnered a pair of top-five program marks in their dual meet against Kent State on Jan. 24.
Redshirt freshman Demetrius Jackson (Beachwood, Ohio) posted the third-best effort in the 200 meters crossing the line in 21.19.
Sophomore Zoi Balamouti (Heraklion, Greece) turned in the No. 5 mark in the women's triple jump with a mark of 40-1.25 (12.22m).
A WEEK AGO: Lucy Bryan recorded the No. 3 mark in the NCAA this season en route to winning the women's pole vault eclipsing 14-7.25 (4.45m) to direct the Zips to a pair of dual-meet victories over Kent State on Jan. 24, at the Kent State Field House.
The Akron men's and women's track and field teams combined to win 19 events on the evening, while placing second in an additional 14 to best Kent State.
In the men's dual meet, Akron bettered the Golden Flashes, 84-67, while the Zips' women's squad edged Kent State, 86-65.
Demetrius Jackson earned a pair of victories on the evening posting winning times of 6.81 and 21.19 in the 60 and 200 meters, respectively. His career-best performance in the 200 meters stands as the third-fastest time in indoor program history and No. 27 time in the NCAA this season.
Zoi Balamouti captured the women's triple jump with the fifth-best mark in indoor program history soaring 40-1.25 (12.22m).
Junior Lindsey Scarton (Berea, Ohio) kicked off the running portion of the meet for Akron women's team winning the women's mile in a time of 5:01.53.
Junior Andre Bollam-Godbott (Brunswick, Ohio) opened the evening on the track for the Zips' men's team capturing the victory in the men's mile in a time of 4:11.67, before placing second in the men's 800 meters in a time of 1:55.04.
Sophomore Jasmyn Allen (Twinsburg, Ohio) crossed the line first in the women's 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.73.
Redshirt junior Patrick Kimball (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won the men's 60-meter hurdles in 8.11, before freshman Zarik Brown (Dayton, Ohio) bested the field in the men's 400 meters crossing the line in a career-best time of 48.01.
Senior Bailey Lack (Brunswick, Ohio) captured the women's 400 meters in a time of 58.12, before anchoring the winning women's 4x400 relay squad of redshirt junior Dimitra Gnafaki (Chania, Greece), senior Iman Batiste (Dublin, Ohio), sophomore Sara Foster (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and Lack, which recorded a time of 3:57.04.
Freshman Makenna Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) bested the field in the women's 800 meters in a career-best time of 2:14.90.
Freshman Blake Lucius (Crestline, Ohio) triumphed in the men's 800 meters in a time of 1:54.74.
Sophomore Lizzy Gurko (Northfield, Ohio) won the women's 3,000 meters crossing the line first in a career-best time of 10:18.50.
Redshirt junior Marc Migliozzi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) registered the victory in the men's 3,000 meters with a time of 8:24.81.
The men's 4x400 relay squad of sophomore Amir Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio), redshirt freshman Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio), Brown and redshirt sophomore Garrett White (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) crossed the line first in a time of 3:19.05.
Redshirt junior Hesham Eldesouky (Nasr City, Egypt) registered a mark of 48-2.75 (14.70m) to triumph in the men's triple jump, while placing second in the long jump with a mark of 24-5.50 (7.45m).
Sophomore Kassandra Roemer (Kaiserlautern, Germany) recorded a career-best mark of 18-7.75 (5.68m) to triumph in the women's long jump.
Senior Shawnn Foster (Cheektowa, N.Y.) capped the evening for the Zips winning the women's weight throw with a career-best mark of 59-9.50 (18.22m).
AKRON DUO EARNS MAC ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS: Lucy Bryan and Demetrius Jackson were recognized by the Mid-American Conference as its Women's Field and Men's Track Athletes of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday, Jan. 28.
BRYAN NAMED AKRON SUMMA HEALTH STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: On the strength of turning in a season-best jump of 14-7.25 (4.45m) to claim the title in the women's pole vault at the Akron-Kent State Dual, Lucy Bryan was chosen as the Akron Summa Health Student-Athlete of the Week.
