AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips men's golf team will open the 2019-20 season while hosting The Firestone Invitational at the par-72, 7,125-yard Firestone Country Club North Course.
The Zips were scheduled to open the season at the Battle at Briar's Creek in Johns Island, S.C., but unfortunately weather conditions due to hurricane conditions canceled the event.
The 54-hole Firestone Invitational is scheduled to begin on Monday at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start and continuous play for 36 holes. Tuesday's final round is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. with split tee times on holes No. 1 and 10.
The 15-team field includes: host Akron, Bowling Green, Dartmouth, Dayton, Drexel, Eastern Michigan, IUPUI, Old Dominion, Ohio, Santa Clara, South Carolina Aiken, Temple, William & Mary, Winthrop and Youngstown State.
The Zips' five-man roster includes senior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio), junior Fabian Sunden (Sweden), sophomore Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio), sophomore Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain) and freshman Braden Smith (Sterling, Ohio). Also Joining Zips at the tournament and competing as individuals are sophomore Kaleb Smith (Mansfield, Ohio) and freshmen Cade Kreps (Boardman, Ohio) and Quinn Patterson (Columbus, Ohio).
In 2018, Akron overcame a seven-stroke deficit to be crowned team champions with an 857 (-7) tournament total. The Firestone Invitational win marked the first time Akron won its own tournament, and it happened in dramatic fashion as it came down to the final golfer and a 15-foot putt attempt to force a playoff with Akron.
Furman earned the tournament runner-up team award with an 858 (-6) score, while Ohio and Eastern Michigan tied at 5-under par with 859 team totals.
The Bobcats Zach Crawford won individual medalist honors with a 10-under par 206 tournament performance on rounds of 69 (-3), 69 (-3) and 68 (-4), while Eastern Michigan's Ty Celone earned runner-up with a 70-69-70 – 209 (-7) effort.
