65TH ANNIVERSARY AKRON MEN'S SOCCER ALUMNI GATHERING INFORMATION
AKRON, Ohio. - The University of Akron men's soccer program will welcome back its legendary alumni for a special evening celebrating the Zips' success on Friday, Oct. 11.

The evening will feature a beer and food-tasting opportunity from 7-10 p.m. at the Thirsty Dog Brewing Company (MAP) in Akron, Ohio (529 Grant Street, Akron, Ohio 44311).

Space for this special evening of memories is limited and the cost is $65 per person. The event will mark the start of a memorable weekend for the Zips as the 2009 men's soccer team will be honored as part of the 45th Annual Varsity "A" Sports Hall of Fame ceremonies on Oct. 12.

The Zips, under the guidance of head coach Caleb Porter, won the 2009 MAC regular-season championship and tournament championship en route to an appearance in the NCAA National Championship game. Akron finished 23-1-1 overall and 6-0 in MAC play.

The Zips went undefeated through the regular season and NCAA Tournament until the College Cup. Akron tied North Carolina 0-0 in the national semifinal, advancing on penalty kicks. The Zips then tied Virginia 0-0 and fell in penalty kicks in the title game.

Fueled by one of the greatest defensive seasons in college history, Akron matched an NCAA record by posting a perfect 23-0-0 record heading into the College Cup in 2009 en route to its runner-up finish. Akron didn't allow a single goal during the NCAA Tournament and finished with 19 shutouts for the campaign, which represented the second highest total all-time. Furthermore, its goals-against-average (0.27) and shutout percentage (.760) were ranked third-best in NCAA history.

The banquet festivities will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Student Union Ballroom with a brunch buffet followed by the induction program at 11:30 a.m. The cost of the banquet is $45 per person and $20 for children (12 and under) for tickets purchased by Sept. 30. The Zips will close out the weekend on the pitch as Akron welcomes Bowling Green to FirstEnergy Stadium for a 7 p.m. match on Oct. 12.
