CLEVELAND, Ohio - Akron volleyball senior Ashley Richardson (Doylestown, Ohio) and junior Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) have been selected by the Mid-American Conference as the MAC East Volleyball Offensive Player and Setter of the Week, the league announced on Monday, Sept. 16.
"Ashley did a great job attacking and blocking this weekend. Her ability to consistently score points for us offensively and defensively were crucial to our success this weekend" said head coach Tom Hanna on Richardson's performance this past weekend.
Richardson was named the MVP of the Akron Invitational after totaling 30 kills, leading Akron to a 3-0 record over the weekend. The middle blocker committed just one attacking error on 57 total attempts, recording an impressive .524 hitting percentage. She also finished with 13 blocks on the weekend to add to her 4.39 points per set.
Richardson currently leads the team in kills (59), kills per set (2.36), hitting percentage (.360), points per set (3.12), blocks (26) and blocks per set (1.04). Her hitting percentage and blocks per set currently rank first in the MAC.
"Emily did a great job running the show for us, putting our hitters in some good situations that we capitalized on" said Hanna on Weigand's performance this past weekend.Â
Weigand was named to Akron Invitational All-Tournament team after totaling 98 assists (10.89/set), helping run an efficient offense and leading the Zips to a 3-0 record over the weekend. She consistently dished out well-placed sets, even when the offense was out of system, which kept the opposing defenses on its toes at all times. She also finished the weekend with 9 kills to go along with 19 digs and 7 blocks. She is currently ranked second in the MAC in assists per set (10.00).Â
Akron will travel to North Dakota Sept. 20-21 to compete in the UND classic, taking on Eastern Washington and North Dakota on Friday, Sept. 20, before wrapping up the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 21 with a match against Lamar.
