Behm and Ludwig Compete at USATF Outdoor Track and Field Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa – University of Akron track and field All-Americans Ian Behm (Volant, Pa.) and Matt Ludwig (Chardon, Ohio) each came up short in their respective bids to earn berths for the IAAF World Track and Field Championships to be held in Doha, Qatar, Sept. 28-Oct. 6, in qualifying competition at the USA Track and Field (USATF) Outdoor National Championships on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday.
Ludwig, who owned a world championship qualifying mark in the men's pole vault, was unable to secure a clearance on each of his three attempts at the opening bar of the competition at 17-11 (5.46m).
After fouling on his opening attempt, Behm recorded a mark of 202-9 (61.81m) on his second throw in the initial flight of the event. He was unsuccessful in improving the mark committing a foul on his third and final attempt of the preliminary round to place 18th.
On Thursday, 2016 Olympic Bronze Medalist and two-time Akron NCAA champion Clayton Murphy, registered the second-fastest qualifying time of 1:46.89 in the preliminary round of the men's 800 meters. He will race in the finals on Sunday at 7:02 p.m. ET.
Abigale Wilson (Carrollton, Ohio) and Jordan Latimer (Huber Heights, Ohio) will round out action for the Zips on Sunday, taking part in the women's discus and men's long jump at 4 and 7 p.m. ET.
The NBC family of networks will provide live coverage of the meet with NBC Sports Gold airing events from 4-7 p.m. ET on Sunday before NBCSN takes over coverage from 7-8 p.m. ET. NBC (WKYC -Cleveland) then rounds out coverage of the championship from 8-9 p.m. ET.
The top-three finishers in each event secure a berth for the United States into IAAF World Track and Field Championships to be held in Doha, Qatar, Sept. 28-Oct. 6.
