AUSTIN, Texas – University of Akron senior Abigale Wilson (Carrollton, Ohio) drew her record-setting Zips' career to a close garnering second-team All-America accolades in the women's discus at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, June 8, with a mark of 179-0 (54.56m) to place 12th.
It represented the second All-America honor for Wilson, who earned honorable mention All-America accolades after placing 20th in the discus at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.
The school- and Mid-American Conference-record holder (200-2/61.02m) in the discus, Wilson suffered a foul on her opening throw of the competition, before recording her best mark of the day, 179-0 (54.56m), on her second attempt. Seeking to better that mark and garner a berth in the championship round, Wilson came up shy in her quest to qualify for the finals on her third and final attempt, placing 12th.
By virtue of senior Lucy Bryan's (Bristol, England) fifth-place performance in the women's pole vault on Thursday, Akron extended its streak of having scored every year in the women's competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships since 2013. The Akron men extended its streak to seven consecutive years as well on Wednesday with an eighth-place effort from senior Jordan Latimer (Huber Heights, Ohio) in the men's long jump.
The Zips finished tied for 48th in the women's team competition with four points, while the men concluded the meet tied for 61st place with one point. Akron bettered 23 Power-Five schools in the final women's standings, while besting 18 in the men's field.
Akron now owns the 11th-longest combined scoring streak for men's and women's teams at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships as the Zips have scored in every meet since 2013.
The Akron women's team sparked by four points this year, maintains the 14th-best streak, while the men's run is the 17th-longest in NCAA Division I.
