A YEAR AGO: Jordan Latimer and Matt Ludwig registered second-place performances in the men's long jump and pole vault, respectively, to spark the efforts of the Zips' track and field squad on the opening day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on June 6, 2018, at historic Hayward Field.
Latimer garnered first-team All-America accolades for the initial time in his distinguished Akron career on the strength of a pair of career-best marks in the men's long jump, while Ludwig captured first-team All-America honors for the fourth time.
Terrell McClain capped his brilliant career for the Zips earning second-team All-America recognition after placing 11th in the men's long jump. In the men's javelin, Rodrigo Iglesias pulled in honorable mention All-America honors finishing 21st.
Latimer registered a career-best mark of 26-3.75 (8.02m), while McClain posted a jump of 25-6 (7.77m) to finish as a four-time All-American.
Entering the evening as the defending NCAA outdoor champion in the men's pole vault, Ludwig sought to earn his second national title and 10th in program history with another historic performance.
After passing on the initial height of 16-10.75 (5.15m), Ludwig easily cleared the bar at 17-4.50 (5.30m). Leading off all vaulters attempting the next height of 17-10.50 (5.45m), Ludwig eclipsed the bar before bettering 18-2.50 (5.55m) on his first attempt to claim the lead over the field.
With four vaulters remaining in the competition, Ludwig suffered his first miss of the evening with the bar at 18-4.50 (5.60m). When South Dakota's Chris Nilsen topped the bar at the height on his first try at the mark, Ludwig elected to pass on his final two attempts at the height.
After Virginia Tech's Torben Laidig and Texas A&M's Jacob Wooten were unable to best 18-4.50 (5.60m), it left only Ludwig and Nilsen remaining in the field.
Ludwig appeared to eclipse the ensuing mark of 18-6.50 (5.65m) clearing the height only to see the bar fall off the standards on his follow through. Nilsen then bested the height to force Ludwig to once again pass on his final attempt at the mark.
In a make-or-break run at 18-8.50 (5.70m) to vault back into first and continue the competition, Ludwig pulled up short on his attempt allowing Nilsen to claim the national title.
Iglesias capped his Akron career placing 21st in the men's javelin with a mark of 207-5 (63.23m).
Lucy Bryan captured first-team All-America accolades on the strength of a sixth-place finish in the women's pole vault to headline the Zips' efforts on the second day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on June 7, 2018.
Bryan made her first-ever appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and eclipsed 14-1.25 (4.30m) to place sixth and become a three-time first-team All-American.
Bryan opened her afternoon bettering the first two bars of the competition at 13-1.50 (4.00m) and 13-7.25 (4.15m) on her initials attempts at the marks. She was unable to clear the bar on her first run at 14-1.25 (4.30m) before eclipsing the mark on her second attempt.
Seeking to establish a new career-high mark of 14-5.25 (4.40m), Bryan came up short on each of her three opportunities to surpass the bar.
Dara Perry made her NCAA debut in the semifinals of the women's 100-meter hurdles and crossed the line in a time of 13.34. Her effort was good for a 20th-place performance and earned Perry honorable mention All-America honors for the first time.
Jackie Siefring and Patricia Ortega along with Abigale Wilson capped the Zips' efforts on the final day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on June 9, 2018, at historic Hayward Field, earning All-America accolades with their performances in the women's heptathlon and discus.
The Zips finished tied with nine schools (Alabama, Arkansas State, Norfolk State, Notre Dame, Portland, San Diego State, Texas Tech, Utah and Washington State) for 46th in the women's team standings with three points.
The Zips' efforts garnered 16 points in the team competition to place Akron in 16th place overall.
Siefring culminated her brilliant Zips' career garnering All-America accolades for the sixth time registering a seven-event cumulative score of 5,725 in the women's heptathlon to place 10th.
Sparked by her second-day efforts, Ortega earned All-America honors for the first time placing 15th in her collegiate career as a seven-event total of 5,542 enabled her to be recognized with second-team All-America laurels.
Persevering through a deluge of rain throughout the second flight of the women's discus competition, Wilson earned honorable mention All-America honors finishing 20th with a mark of 134-11 (41.13m). Her effort came on her opening attempt in the competition.
