YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams collected 18 victories as part of 41 overall top-three performances on the opening day of the Northeast Ohio Quad on Friday, April 5, at the Farmers National Bank Field on the campus of Youngstown State University.
Recording the second-fastest performance in outdoor program history to win the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a career-best time of 10:27.21 was senior Mackenzie Andrews (Toowoomba, Australia).
Taking the top-two spots in the women's 1,500 meters was sophomore Leah Recker (Findlay, Ohio) and junior Haley Hess (Curtice, Ohio), as the duo crossed the line in 4:39.61 and 4:41.95, respectively. Recker went on to also win the women's 800 meters in 2:16.61.
Senior Lucy Bryan (Bristol, England) cleared 14-4 (4.37m) to take first-place honors in the women's pole vault, while redshirt sophomore Abby Helminiak (Toledo, Ohio) surpassed 12-11.50 (3.95m) to finish second.
Senior Matt Ludwig (Chardon, Ohio) eclipsed 18-0.50 (5.50m) to win the men's pole vault, while junior Matt Keim (Bollivar, Ohio) placed third with a career-best outdoor mark of 16-8.25 (5.09m).
The Zips captured the top-three finishes in the men's long jump as senior Jordan Latimer (Huber Heights, Ohio), redshirt sophomore Hesham Eldesouky (Nasr City, Egypt) and freshman Bobby Casey (Mayfield, Ohio) posted marks of 24-10.50 (7.58m), 24-1.50 (7.35m) and 22-9.25 (6.94m), respectively.
Registering the third-best mark, 50-1.75 (15.28m), in outdoor program history to win the men's triple jump was Eldesouky, while junior Marcques Gibbs (Darby, Pa.) finished second with a mark of 46-5.25 (14.15m).
Redshirt sophomore Nick Stricklen (Lexington, Ohio) captured the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase in a career-best time of 9:18.87, while redshirt sophomore Marc Migliozzi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and sophomore Andre Bollam-Godbott (Brunswick, Ohio) finished first and second, respectively, in the men's 1,500 meters registering times of 3:56.53 and 3:57.59.
Sophomore Lindsey Scarton (Berea, Ohio) recorded a career-best time of 17:27.53 to capture the women's 5,000 meters, while senior Ashley Murray (Seville, Ohio) finished second in a career-best time of 17:32.77.
Freshman Nuh Andu (Doha, Qatar) won the men's high jump with a mark of 6-9.50 (2.07m), while redshirt junior Maike Anstett (Karlsuhe, Germany) finished first in the women's high jump with a career-best clearance of 5-6.50 (1.69m).
Freshman Zoi Balamouti (Heraklion, Greece) recorded the top mark in the women's long jump, 17-7 (5.36m) to win the event.
Balamouti and Anstett later recorded marks of 37-5.25 (11.41m) and 37-5.25 (11.41m) to place second and third in the women's triple jump.
Senior Dara Perry (Akron, Ohio) was first across the line in the women's 100-meter hurdles in 13.85, while freshman Victoria Abunaw (Maumee, Ohio) finished third in 14.34.
Freshmen Amir Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Zach Robinson (Pickerington, Ohio) went one-two in the men's 400 meters registering career-best times of 48.96 and 49.47.
Collecting career-best times of 1:56.29 and 1:56.34 to finish first and second, respectively, in the men's 800 meters was freshman Sam Janson (Dayton, Ohio) and redshirt freshman Noah Williams (Hilton, N.Y.).
Junior Iman Batiste (Dublin, Ohio) recorded a career-best time of 57.67 to triumph in the women's 400 meters, while junior Bailey Lack (Brunswick, Ohio) crossed the line second in 58.21.
Freshman Sara Foster (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio), junior Dimitra Gnafaki (Chania, Greece) and senior Sydney Stokes (Gahanna, Ohio) swept the top-three spots in the women's 400-meter hurdles posting times of 61.93, 62.78 and 64.54, respectively.
Redshirt junior Tevin Brown (Toledo, Ohio) recorded a career-best outdoor time of 14:44.09 to place second in the men's 5,000 meters.
The women's 4x400 relay team of Foster, Gnafaki, Lack and Batiste registered a winning time of 3:56.83, while the women's 4x100 relay squad of junior Tanea Cousins (Chillicothe, Ohio), freshmen Najiya Cornish (Wilmington, De.) and Jasmyn Allen (Twinsburg, Ohio) and Perry finished second in 48.94.
The men's 4x400 relay team of Robinson, redshirt freshman Garrett White (Cleveland Heights, Ohio), sophomore Andrew Wahl (Northfield, Ohio) and Janson crossed the line in 3:15.40 to earn a second-place performance.
Recording a third-place finish in the men's 110-meter hurdles was redshirt sophomore Patrick Kimball (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in a time of 14.35, while junior Dylan Hochbein (Sarver, Pa.) placed third in the men's 400-meter hurdles in 54.30.
The Northeast Ohio Quad will conclude on Saturday, April 6, as competition in the throwing events moves to the Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex on the University of Akron campus. Action gets underway at 10 a.m.
