AURORA – The Akron Zips men's golf team opened the 2019 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championships with a 311 (+23) which currently ranks eighth overall after the first 18-of-36 holes on Saturday.
The 72-hole league final was shortened to 54 holes due to Friday's weather at Club Walden Golf Club. The par-72, 7,202-yard course is still saturated, but playable.
In their MAC Championships debut, freshman Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain) and freshmen Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio) led Akron's scoring through round one. Puente carded a 77 (+5) opening round score for a four-way stalemate, ranking 18th overall. Puente carded 1-of-6 eagles by all competitors, posting a three on the par-5 third hole (491 yards). Three holes later, he added a birdie and finished the round with an additional 10 pars, three bogeys and two double bogeys.
Bayerl is also ranked 18th with a 5-over ledger. He buried 11 par scores with two birdies, three bogeys and two double bogeys.
Sophomore Fabian Sunden (Sweden), also making his MAC tournament debut, opened the event with a 78 (+6) score which was good for a tie at 22nd place.
Senior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) and junior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) rounded out the first-round scoring with 79 (+7) and 83 (+11) scores, respectively. Grayson enters second round ranked tied for 30th while McFarland was tied for 40th overall.
