MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The University of Akron rifle freshman Andre Gross (Webster, N.Y.) finished second in the smallbore competition at the 2019 NCAA Rifle Championships on Friday, March 8, in Morgantown, W. Va.
Gross was Akron's first ever athlete to earn an individual invitation in smallbore. Gross wore the same bib number as Jenna Compton, who won the national championship title in air rifle 10 years ago. Additionally, the last time Akron had someone qualify for the championships was in 2015, when Matt Chezem finished 25th overall in air rifle.
The freshman fired a score of 586 to earn a place in the finals. His score was not only a new personal best but also a new program record, which included 33 perfect shots.
Throughout the final round, Gross rarely dropped below the top three. Additionally, as the elimination process began he remained in first until just the final shots. On the shot to take clinch the title, TCU's Elizabeth Marsh fired a 10.6 to top Gross' 9.1.
Gross shot a total score of 454.8 in finals, while Mash became the smallbore champion with a score of 456.9. West Virginia's David Koenders finished in third with a score of 444.8.
The 2019 NCAA Rifle Championships conclude, Saturday, March 9, with air rifle competition. Although this is the end of Akron's rifle season, it was one that added many new lines to the record book.
