Akron Women’s Tennis Sweeps Cleveland State, 7-0

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team closed out home non-conference play with a 7-0 win over Cleveland State on Wednesday afternoon at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.
"Excellent total team win today.," said ninth-year head coach Brandon Padgett. "I'm really proud of the consistent effort that was shown on every court."
The Zips (14-3 overall) earned the doubles point over the Vikings (56 overall) with wins at No. 1 and 2.
At No. 1, junior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) defeated Klara Mrccela and Kate Avram, 6-2.
At No. 2, redshirt senior captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) and sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) beat Isabella Spindler and Gaby Schoenberg, 6-3.
UA swept all six singles matches for their third consecutive team shutout victory.
"Frank does a great job of getting his team ready to play, so for us to be able to win this match the way we did says a lot about where we are as a team right now."
At No. 1, Geier beat Spindler in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 2, Vasilescu claimed a 6-2, 6-4 win over Mrccela.
At No. 3, Uljanov handled Sian Payne, 6-1, 6-4
At No. 4, senior Luisa Echeverry (Cali Colombia) defeated Lara Prosenjak, 6-4, 6-4.
At No. 5, freshman Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico) battled Schoenberg for a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10) victory.
At No. 6, Pedroso defeated Avram, 6-1, 6-1.
Akron will take two weeks off before closing out the non-conference slate at Youngtown State on Tuesday, March 19, at 3 p.m. Mid-American Conference play begins on March 22 at home with Miami (Ohio) at 1 p.m.
