AKRON, Ohio – After a two-week rest, the University of Akron women's tennis team returns to action this week with three matches.
The Zips (14-3 overall) close out non-conference action with a quick trip to Youngstown State (3-11 overall) on Tuesday, March 19, for a 2 p.m. match at the Western Reserve Tennis Center in Streetsboro.
UA opens Mid-American Conference play at home this weekend. The Zips host Miami (Ohio) [2-9 overall] on Friday, March 22, at 1 p.m. Akron then entertains Bowling Green (6-5 overall) on Sunday, March 24, at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
"Our next two opponents– Youngstown and Miami– are much better than their records indicate," said Akron head coach Brandon Padgett. "They've both played exceptionally difficult schedules which means they'll be match-ready. Bowling Green is essentially the same team as last year; they have one new player. They are very deep and very talented. They play with a care-free mentality which definitely helps them."
In series action, Akron holds a 26-5 series advantage over YSU. While members of the teams met during tournament play last fall, this is the first dual match. Last season, the Penguins edged the Zips, 4-3.
Miami holds a 26-3 series edge over Akron. Last spring, the Redhawks claimed a 5-2 win in Oxford.
In series action, Bowling Green leads UA, 29-10. Last season, BGSU captured a 6-1 home win.
Akron will be led by redshirt senior and three-time team captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) at the No. 1 spot. The 2017 MAC Player of the Year, she stands 19-4 in singles action and 11-1 in spring action, all at the No. 1 spot.
Sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) stands 15-8 overall and 12-3 this spring, playing at No. 1 and No. 2. She is a perfect 4-0 at the No. 1 spot.
Senior Luisa Echeverry (Cali Colombia) is 11-4 in singles action this spring, playing the No. 2-5 spots.
Senior Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico) stands 5-2 in singles action this spring, playing the No. 5-6 positions.
In doubles action, junior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and Vasilescu stand 16-6 overall and 11-4 this spring at the No. 1 position.
At No. 2, Geier and sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) are 12-2 overall and 9-2 this spring.
