AKRON, Ohio – Three University of Akron divers are set to compete for a spot at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships this week at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships, March 14-16. The meet is hosted by Purdue at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.
The divers representing the Zips will be junior Katelyn Applin (Dansville, N.Y.), senior Karly Crail (Edgewood, Ky.) and sophomore Andrea Bugariu (Troy, Mich.). All three divers will be competing in the one-meter diving on Thursday, March 14, at 1 p.m. and in the three-meter on Friday, March 15, at 1 p.m.
The top 18 finishers in preliminaries on both the one- and three-meter boards advance to finals. Zone C has nine automatic qualifying spots to the NCAA Championships in the one-meter diving and eight in the three-meter. Once a diver has auto-qualified in one event, he or she only has to be among the top 12 in an additional event to also be eligible to compete in it at NCAAs.
The field in Zone C includes 23 schools from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky. The Zips will compete against familiar competition from the Mid-American Conference. Additionally, Akron has met Ohio State, Notre Dame, Cleveland State, Cincinnati and Oakland in meets throughout the regular season.
Crail leads the Zips on the boards, having recorded a zone qualifying score seven times this season. The senior finished seventh in the one-meter diving at MAC Championships with a score of 257.30. Additionally, Crail scored a lifetime best 314.35 on the three-meter to finish second overall.
Also recording a personal best at the MAC Championships was Applin who finished ninth in the three-meter diving with a score of 293.65. Bugariu earned a zone qualifying score of 278.48 on the one-meter in Akron's final dual of the season.
ZONE C SCHEDULE
Thursday, March 14 – 1 PM – Men's 1-Meter, Women's 3-Meter
Friday, March 15 – 1 PM – Women's 1-Meter, Men's 3-Meter
Saturday, March 16 – 11 AM – Women's Platform, Men's Platform to follow (2 p.m.)
