22nd annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate next for Men’s Golf

Akron, Ohio – The University of Akron men's golf team will return to action on Monday and Tuesday, March 11-12, for the 22nd annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by South Carolina Aiken in Aiken, S.C.
"The Srixon/Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate is such a great event, and one we look forward to every year," head coach David Trainer said. "To have the support of a company like Srixon/Cleveland Golf and up to be able to compete on a golf course like Palmetto is a real treat for not only our guys, but for the entire field. This course tests every part of your game. I look forward to getting out to the course and making out our game plan."
The 54-hole event will be played at the Palmetto golf course, a par-70 course that spans 6,617 yards. The 18-team field includes host S. Carolina – Aiken, Akron, Army West Point, Charleston Southern, Clemson, Francis Marion, Furman, Memphis, Presbyterian, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Temple, UAB, VCU, Virginia, William & Mary, Winthrop and Wofford College.
The tournament will format will be a shotgun start for both days beginning at 8:30 a.m. with continuous play through 36 holes on Monday and final 18-hole round on Tuesday. Fans can follow the action with GolfStat Live Scoring.
The Zips' starting five includes, senior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.), redshirt freshmen Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio), junior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio), sophomore Fabian Sunden (Sweden) and freshman Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain).
Last season, Akron completed the 54-hole event with an 881 (+41) and 13th overall as Virginia won the team championship with an even-par 840 tournament total. The Zips opened the tournament with rounds of 291 (+11) and 287 (+7) for the 18-over ledger. Despite the four-stroke improvement in round two, Akron fell from a 10th place tie to 14th overall.
Grayson paced Akron's starting five with a Top 15 performance, tying for 14th overall with a 214 (+4) tournament total. He fired a 74 (+4) final round after opening the day with an even-par 140 stroke total. Grayson opened the 54-hole event with a 2-over par 72 effort and bounced back with a 2-under par 68 score. Grayson carded six birdies.
The Zips are coming off a 16th place finish at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate. The Zips finished the 54-hole tournament with a 921 (+57) on rounds of 313 (+25), 308 (+20), and 300 (+12) at the Wexford Plantation Course, a par 72 Arnold Palmer signature course that measures 6,913 yards in length.
Grayson fired an even-par 72 final round to finish the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate fourth overall, and defeated three GolfStat Top 100 players in South Carolina Aiken's Dan Sheehan (72nd) and August Lindvall (74th) along with 96-ranked Jack Lang from Davidson with rounds of 71-72-72 for a 215 (-1) 54-hole performance.
