Men’s Golf Opens Spring Season at the 14th-annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's golf team opens the spring season with the 14th-annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 25-26, hosted by Francis Marion University on Hilton Head Island.
"We are excited to getting this spring season underway," said head coach David Trainor. "We have worked hard these past couple of weeks, and I know our guys are looking forward to getting out and seeing what we can do on the golf course. We prepared well and now it's time to go and have some fun."
The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Wexford Plantation course, an Arnold Palmer signature course, measures 6,913 yards and is a par 72 layout. On Monday, the 19-team field is scheduled to play 36 holes, leaving the final 18 holes for Tuesday. Both days will begin with shotgun starts at 8:15 a.m. Fans can follow the action via GolfStat Live Scoring.
The field includes host Francis Marion, Akron, Bucknell, Charleston Southern, Cleveland State, Cornell, Dartmouth, Davidson, Dayton, Furman, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Memphis, Presbyterian, Radford, Temple, USC Aiken, Winthrop, and Wofford.
Akron's five-man lineup includes senior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.), redshirt freshmen Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio), junior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio), sophomore Fabian Sunden (Sweden) and junior Jacob Morgan (Lafayette, Ga.).
In four fall tournaments, Akron averaged a 296.1 team stroke total per round. In addition, the Zips posted their first win at their own Firestone Invitational, claiming the title over the 17-team field with a 7-under 857 performance. Akron also tallied two 7th-place finishes and a 13th place showing.
The Zips are coming off the successful fall season led by Grayson's team-low 73.18 stroke average. Grayson delivered two Top 25 finishes including a 5-under par, 4th-place finish at the Firestone Invitational. In 11 rounds, Grayson fired three rounds of par or better, including a 68 (-3), and a pair of 71 scores.
Bayerl and McFarland follow with 74.00 and 74.27 stroke averages, respectively. Bayerl earned one Top 25 finish with three rounds of par or better and a 68 (+3) low round, while McFarland owned two Top 25 placements with three rounds of par or better and a 70 (-2) low score. Sunden and Morgan tallied 76.63 and 76.67 fall stroke averages.
Texas Christian won last year's event, while the Zips finished 11th overall. TCU fired an 853-stroke, 11-under par team tally for the win, and Georgia earned runner-up honors with a 10-under performance.
TCU's Stefano Mazzoli earned individual medalist with 70-72-65 – 206 (-10) scores and Georgia's David Thompson was runner-up with a 67-72-69 – 208 (-8) ledger.
Gardner-Webb won the 2017 title, while Wofford captured the 2015 championship. USCA previously won the 2014, 2006, and 2009 tournaments. Other past winners include Campbell University (2016), Elon University (2008) Georgia Southern University (2013), Georgia State University (2012), Indiana University (2011), Wake Forest University (2010), and the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga (2007).
