Akron Women’s Tennis Picks Up Two Home Wins

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team picked up two home wins on Saturday at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.

In morning action, the Zips handed Detroit Mercy (3-3 overall) a 6-1 loss. In the night cap, Akron (10-3 overall) earned a 6-1 win over Binghamton (0-11 overall).

"It's always difficult to play two matches in a single day, but we do it to push our team both physically and mentally," said ninth-year head coach Brandon Padgett. "We didn't play our best tennis, but we managed to come away with two solid team wins."

Against Detroit Mercy, the Zips took the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Play at No. 1 stopped once the doubles point was clinched. At No. 2, redshirt senior captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) and sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) swept Iris Thioux and Sophie Torchello, 6-0.

At No. 3, senior Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico) and freshman Enya Forgaci (Boca Raton, Fla.) defeated Ksenia Providokhina and Sara Mitrakovic, 6-1.

In singles action, sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) moved up to No. 1 and handed Jasmine Apawti a 6-2, 6-4 defeat.

At No. 3, senior Luisa Echeverry (Cali Colombia) defeated Chelsea Apawti in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.

At No. 4, junior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) battled Providokhina to a 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (4) win.

At No. 5, freshman Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico) defeated Torchello in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

At No. 6, Flores shut out Mitrakovic, 6-0, 6-0.

Against Binghamton, UA captured the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. At No. 1, Pedroso and Vasilescu defeated Tiffany Dun and Samara Eisenberg, 6-1.

In singles action, Vasilescu beat Samara Eisenberg in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 1 spot.

At No. 2, Uljanov battled Michelle Eisenberg to a 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (5) victory.

At No. 3, Rosas defeated Dun, 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (5).

At No. 4, Forgaci beat Maria Pandya, 6-1, 6-2.

Akron returns to road action next week for three matches. The first stop is Illinois State on Thursday, Feb. 28, for a Noon CT (1 p.m. ET) match at the Bloomington Tennis Center.
