Akron Women’s Tennis Claims 6-1 Win at Illinois State

NORMAL, Ill. – The University of Akron women's tennis team opened road play with a 6-1 win at Illinois State on Thursday afternoon at the Bloomington Tennis Center.
The Zips (11-3 overall) earned the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 2 as the Redbirds (7-5 overall) did not field a team at No. 3 due to injuries.
At No. 1, junior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) defeated Veronika Golanova and Jana Kustkova, 6-4.
At No. 2, redshirt senior captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) and sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) beat out Tara Damnjanovic and Laura Fitzgerald, 6-2.
"Solid match today all the way around," said ninth-year head coach Brandon Padgett. "Some players were off today but fought through pretty well. It takes mental toughness to push through and win a match when you aren't playing your best, and some did that today."
In singles action, UA won five matches. At No. 1, Geier beat Golanova in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
At No. 2, Vasilescu handled Damnjanovic, 6-3, 6-3.
At No. 3, Uljanov battled Kustkova to a 7-6 (6), 6-1 victory.
At No. 5, freshman Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico) went three sets to defeat Fitzgerald, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
At No. 6, Pedroso picked up the default win as ISU did not field a player.
Akron visits on Butler (6-6 overall) on Saturday, March 2, at 1 p.m. at the Butler Tennis Bubble. UA then faces IUPUI (2-6 overall) at 6 p.m. at the West Indy Racquet Club.
