COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team suffered its third loss of the season with a 7-0 shutout at No. 10 Ohio State (6-2 overall) on Wednesday evening at the Varsity Tennis Center.

"What a great fight from this team tonight," said ninth-year head coach Brandon Padgett. "We played outstanding tennis and can only take positive things from this match. I couldn't be more proud of this group."

The Buckeyes took the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Play at No. 1 stopped once the doubles point was clinched.

In singles action, redshirt senior captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) battled at the No. 1 position. She won the first set, 6-2, but dropped the next two sets, 6-4, 6-0, to No. 72-ranked Shiori Fukuda for her first loss this spring.

At No. 3, sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) also played three sets, winning the first, 6-3, against No. 48-ranked Kolie Allen before falling 6-4, 6-4.

After a month of road matches, Akron (8-3 overall, 0-0 MAC) returns home on Saturday, Feb. 23, to host Detroit Mercy at 9:30 a.m. The Zips then take on Binghamton at 6:30 p.m. Detroit Mercy and Binghamton play each other at 2 p.m. All matches will be played at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
