PITTSBURGH – The University of Akron women's tennis team claimed its eighth win on the season with a 5-2 victory over Duquesne (4-3 overall, 0-0 A-10) on Friday afternoon at Alpha Tennis and Fitness of Pittsburgh.
"Great team effort today," ninth-year head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Duquesne is a very good team, so we knew that we would have to play at a high level to win. We got pushed on several courts which will absolutely help us moving forward. Having to pull Rita due to illness was a tough break for her, but she fought as long as she could for the team."
Akron took the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. At No. 1, junior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) defeated Julianne Herman and Laurel Shymansky, 6-2.
At No. 2, redshirt senior captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) and sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) picked up a 6-4 win over Margot Pessy and Aishwarya Kona.
"We worked hard this week on doubles and it paid off. As a team we continue to get better and better with each match, and that's all we can ever ask. This team works hard and has a tremendous bond, which shows strongly as they fight on court not only for themselves, but for each other."
In singles action, Akron (8-1 overall, 0-0 MAC) claimed four wins.
At No. 1, Geier, this week's MAC Singles Player of the Week, dropped the first set, 5-7, then rebounded for a 6-1, 6-1 win over Herman.
At No. 2, Uljanov defeated Shymansky, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.
At No. 3, Vasilescu beat out Kona, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.
At No. 4, senior Luisa Echeverry (Cali Colombia) won in straight sets over Maddy Adams, 6-2, 6-4.
On Saturday, Feb. 16, Akron travels to West Virginia (3-1 overall, 0-1 Big 12) for a 1 p.m. match at the Summit Tennis Academy. Live stats will be available.
