MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The University of Akron women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision at West Virginia (4-1 overall, 0-1 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon at Summit Tennis Academy.
"Difficult loss today but a great effort by this team," ninth-year head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We had a chance to get the doubles point with outstanding play at the top two positions, but we came up just short. Singles was a battle from beginning to end, and I'm extremely proud of the fight that was shown. We can and will use this match to get better!"
The Mountaineers took the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. At No. 1, junior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) defeated Paula Goetz and Nicole Roc, 6-4.
In singles action, Akron (8-2 overall, 0-0 MAC) claimed three wins.
At No. 1, redshirt senior captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) dropped the first set, 6-4, then battled back to beat Paula Goetz, 6-2, 7-6 (7).
At No. 3, Vasilescu beat Roc in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
In the final match of the day, freshman Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico) battled Giovanna Caputo to a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (4) victory.
Akron travels to Ohio State on Wednesday, Feb. 20, for a 6 p.m. match.
