AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team continues road action this week with two non-conference regional matches.
The Zips (7-1 overall, 0-0 MAC) visit Duquesne (4-2 overall, 0-0 A-10) on Friday, Feb. 15, for a 1 p.m. match at Alpha Tennis and Fitness of Pittsburgh. Live streaming of the matches will be available.
On Saturday, Feb. 16, Akron travels to West Virginia (2-1 overall, 0-1 Big 12) for a 1 p.m. match at the Summit Tennis Academy. Live stats will be available.
In series action, Akron leads Duquesne, 9-7. In their last meeting in 2017, the Zips picked up a 6-1 win at home.
West Virginia holds an 11-4 series edge over the Zips. Last season, the Mountaineers claimed a 5-2 win.
Akron will be led by redshirt senior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany), this week's MAC Singles Player of the Week, at the No. 1 spot. Last week she upset No. 86 Claudia Bartolome of Pittsburgh in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. She is 14-3 overall and 6-0 in singles play this spring.
At No. 2, sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) is 8-7 overall and 5-2 this spring.
In doubles action, junior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and Vasilescu stand 9-6 overall and 4-4 this spring at the No. 1 position.
At No. 2, Geier and sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) are 6-1 overall and 3-1 this spring.
