Akron Swimming and Diving Captures Sixth Consecutive Zippy Invitational Title

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron swimming and diving team claimed its sixth consecutive Zippy Invitational title on Sunday evening at Ocasek Natatorium.

Akron accumulated a total of 2,138 points over the course of the weekend. Oakland recorded a second-place score of 1,731, while Cornell placed third with 1,441 points. Cornell captured the men's title with 2,527.5 points, while Oakland followed with 1,784 points and Cincinnati recorded a score of 1,317 to place third.

The final session of the meet started out with the 1,650 freestyle. Sophomore Brooke Lamoureux (Belleville, Ontario) took second in the event with a time of 16:41.33 which ranks fourth all-time for Akron swimmers. Freshman Andrea Galisteo (Madrid, Spain) was close behind in third, touching the wall at 16:55.78. Finishing in fourth was senior Jessica Bonezzi (Wooster, Ohio) with a time of 16:57.30.

Freshman Weronika Gorecka (Wroclaw, Poland) came out on top in the 200 backstroke with an NCAA Division I B cut time of 1:55.75. That time also ranks second all-time for Akron. Teammate Victoria Kaufman (Westminster, Md.) finished fourth with a time of 2:00.63.

Senior Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio) followed that up with a strong performance in the 100 freestyle, placing first with a B cut time of 49.42. Not far behind in second was Sarah Watson (Winipeg, Manitoba) who touched the wall at 49.84. Finishing in a close fourth was Rachel Schiffli (Indianapolis, Ind.) who finished at 50.49.

Junior Paula Garcia (Madrid, Spain) and Fischer finished first and second respectively in the 200 breaststroke, both turning B cut times of 2:11.29 and 2:11.68, respectively. Those times rank third and fourth all-time for Akron.Â
Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) concluded her strong weekend in the water by smashing the MAC and meet record in the 200 butterfly with a B cut time of 1:56.49, breaking the previous record of 1:57.05 held by teammate Mackenzie Vargas (Roseville, Calif.), who finished second in the race with a time of 1:59.53.
In the final event of the competition, the 400 medley relay, the Zips took first thanks to the quartet of Nogaj, Watson, Schiffli and Waggoner with a six all-time best time of 3:18.27.Â
