Akron splits against Ohio State and Kenyon

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Akron swimming and diving defeated Kenyon 229-60 but fell to Ohio State 213-85 Friday night in Columbus. The loss marks Akron's first loss of the season, as they sit at 3-1. Ohio State improved to 4-1 with the win against Akron and Kenyon.Â

The Zips got off to a rough start as they disqualified their only entry in the 400 Medley Relay.  In the second event of the night the Zips bounced back with a fourth-place finish by junior Brooke Lamoureux (Victoria, Canada) in the 1000 freestyle (10:22.01). Sophomore Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) followed that up with a quick time of 1:50.87 in the 200 free, which earned her a second-place finish.Â

Freshman Weronika Gorecka (Wroclaw, Poland) was the Zips highest finisher in the 100 backstroke (55.81).

In one of her strongest performances this season, sophomore Andrea Fischer (Oak Grove, Minn.) finished third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.03.

Junior Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) continued to shine in the pool as she has all season, coming out on top in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall at 1:59.29.

Akron had two top-five finishes in the 50 free, including senior Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio) who swam a time of 23.75, and freshman Rachel Schiffli (Indianapolis, Ind.) who was close behind at 24.10

In the 3-meter dive, Akron was able to finish with two divers in the top five, including junior Andrea Bugariu (Shelby Twp, Mich.) who finished third with a score of 281.60, and freshman Paige Kalik (Irwin, Penn.) who finished fourth with a score of 274.65.

Nogaj placed third in the next event, the 100 free, with a time of 51.08. Close behind was Waggoner in fourth with a time of 51.81.

The Zips finished first and third respectively in the 200 backstroke, with Gorecka (1:58.71), and sophomore Olivia Gardner (Bromsgrove, England) who finished at 2:01.76.

Fischer had another strong showing in the 200 breaststroke, winning the event with a time of 2:16.68. Freshman Gail Workman(Cincinnati, Ohio) followed that up in the next event the 500 free as the Zips top finisher touching the wall at 5:05.58.

Watson picked up her first victory of the evening, swimming an impressive 55.36 in the 100 fly.Â

In the final diving event of the night, the 1-meter dive, Bugariu and Kalik once again earned top-five finishes, with scores of 261.35 and 256.70, respectively.

Gardner was the Zips top finisher in the 200 IM, touching the wall at 2:06.49.

In the final event of the evening, the quartet of Nogaj, Waggoner, Watson and sophomore Sofia Hennell (Linkoping, Sweden) swam an impressive 1:34.23 in the 200 free relay, earning a second-place finish.Â

The Zips will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m., as they take on Ohio.Â
