AKRON, Ohio – No. 4 Akron rifle will host North Georgia on Saturday, Nov. 22 at Robert A. Pinn shooting range. Action is set to begin at 9 a.m.
Â
Akron is currently 4-2 (3-2 GARC) on the season, coming off a split in a three-way match against No. 1 West Virginia and No. 10 N.C. State. The Zips topped N.C. State while falling to West Virginia (4710-4672-4666).

"In our sport, like all sports, when a team breaks out of the rankings they have been in for a while it is natural to wonder if it was just a fluke. When it happens a second time people start wondering if they were just lucky twice. However, it is widely accepted that if a team does it three times, it's officially a new trend. Now, for Akron Rifle, it's official. 4669 against Navy, 4677 against Ole Miss and now 4672 at WVU has firmly thrown Akron into the #5 slot in the national rankings. Truly way above the old record of #9 achieved several years ago. The incredibly cool part of this journey is I don't think they are done. Actually, I think they are just beginning. This weekend we may be going up against a younger University of North Georgia team, but our team will have the peddle to the metal hoping to post yet one more attention grabbing team score. This will be the last home match of the semester as well as the last match for the first half of the rifle season. After Christmas the team will be re-charged and ready to jump full speed ahead into the shorter but high intensity second half of the season beginning with the January 18 road trip to Morehead KY" said head coach Newt Engle.
Â
Akron is led by sophomore Andre Gross (Webster, N.Y.), who has an aggregate average of 1167.167 on the season (580 SB, 587.167 AR). Not far behind are junior Wyatt Openshaw (Parkton, Md.) and senior Kera Kaufman (Delmont, S.D) who are averaging a 1166.500 and 1164.834, respectively.Â
Â
North Georgia is coming off of a second-place finish in a three-team match against the Citadel and No. 14 Jacksonville State, as they shot 4561.Â
Â
The Zips will be back in action next week as they will be hosting the annual Turkey Shoot on Monday, Nov. 25 and will continue on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
