Akron Bounces Back at Mountaineer Invitational

Bridgeport, W.Va. – The Akron Zips finished the Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational hosted by No. 25 West Virginia with rounds of 312 (+24) and 306 (+18) for a 944 (+80) tournament total on Tuesday afternoon.

Akron's scoring was led by junior Fabian Sunden (Sweden), who bounced back from an opening 85 (+15) with a 77 (+5) and 71 (-1) scores. He finished the 54-hole event with a 233 (+17) total, ranking tied at 49th overall.

Senior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) added 237 (+21) performance to the cause, carding rounds of 80-77-80. McFarland finished 65th overall.

Also, scoring for the Zips were sophomore Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain) and freshman Braden Smith (Sterling, Ohio). They notched 238 (+22) and 239 (+23) scores en route to a 70th and 73rd place finishes, respectively.

Sophomore Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio) rounded out Akron's scoring efforts with a 247 (+31) tally, which was good for 78th place.

WVU came from behind to claim a three-stroke victory over the field, registering an even-par 864 total. Florida Atlantic was runner-up with 687 (+3) ledger.

Kevin Scherr (Youngstown State) earned medalist with a 3-under par performance 70-72-71 – 213, while five players tied for runner-up honors with 1-under par performances.

Next, Akron will travel to the Flyer Invitational hosted by Dayton on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 14-15.
