Women’s Tennis Ties UConn, Falls to CSU on Second Day of Viking Invitational

CLEVELAND– The University of Akron women's tennis had a tie and a loss on Saturday at the fourth annual Viking Invitational at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
In morning singles action, the Zips tied Connecticut, 3-3. At No. 2 singles, junior Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) dropped the first set over Mireille Moreau, 2-6, before rebounding for the victory, 6-4, 1-0 (6).
At No. 3 singles, sophomore Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico) defeated Cassie Chung in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
At No. 5 singles, freshman Tanja Derowski (Bruckmuehl, Germany) battled Elizabth Kozyi to a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (5) win.
In afternoon doubles action, Akron fell to host Cleveland State, 3-0.
"Much better in tiebreakers today, which is really important," said interim head coach Brian Peters. "Singles, collectively looked good. In doubles we were tested by a great Cleveland State line-up which forced us into a lot of early mistakes. That we will work on heavily in practice this week."
Play at the Viking Invitational concludes Sunday, Oct. 6. The Zips begin action at 11:30 a.m.
