Women’s Tennis Heads to Viking Invitational

AKRON, Ohio– The University of Akron women's tennis team travels to the fourth annual Viking Invitational, hosted by Cleveland State, on Oct. 4-6 at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion on the CSU campus.
Joining Akron and CSU will be Connecticut and Xavier. Action begins on Friday, Oct. 4, at 10 a.m. with singles action. Doubles follow at 12:30 p.m.
Play continues on Saturday, Oct. 5, and Sunday, Oct. 6.
At the conclusion of weekend play, there will be a Viking Invitational Singles Champion and a Viking Invitational Doubles Champion. Points will be awarded based on line-up position, with the singles player and doubles team with the most points after three days of play crowned champions. Akron's Sophia Geier (2015-19) was the 2018 singles champion.
Under the guidance of interim head coach Brian Peters, Akron returns six letterwinners– senior Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal); juniors Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany), Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany); and sophomores Enya Forgaci (Boca Raton, Fla.), Holland Long (Rochester, N.Y.), and Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico).
This fall, UA welcomed three newcomers– junior transfer Jemi Aguilar (Weston, Fla.), and freshmen Tanja Derowski (Bruckmuehl, Germany) and Aliona Kruglov (Karmiel, Israel).
At the Thunder in the Mountains three-day tournament on Sept. 20-22, Rosas went undefeated in singles play, beating players from West Virginia, Toledo, and Youngstown State. In doubles play, she teamed with Long and went 2-1. During the opening weekend, Rosas went a combined 5-1, the best of any Zip.
