YPSILANTI, Mich. – A trio of goals by the Akron women's soccer team propelled the Zips to its second consecutive win as UA dropped Eastern Michigan, 3-2, in Mid-American conference action on Thursday afternoon.

With the win over the Eagles, Akron improved its league record to 4-4-1 and picked up a crucial three points in the MAC standings with two games remaining in the campaign.

"Brilliant performance by the players, they showed a lot of character. It's a tough place to play. We did well to go up 3-0 but let them back in it. When they got a penalty, a handball in the box to make it 3-2, it was simply a matter of grinding it out from there. Massive three points on the road and delighted for the players" said head coach Noreen Herlihy.

Akron claimed an early advantage over the Eagles which was key to the Zips victory. Senior Ashley Amato (Pittsburgh, Pa.) netted her fourth goal of the season at the 17:08 mark of the first half. The senior defender's goal was set up by a shot on goal by freshman Aislinn Meaney (Ennis, Ireland). Her shot was deflected to Amatowho fired the ball into the back of the net on the second chance opportunity.

The Zips held a 1-0 lead for the next 26 minutes, until late in the first half when sophomore Carly Pcholinsky (South Park, Pa.) scored her fourth goal of the season in the 44' of the match. Akron was able to hold Eastern Michigan to a scoreless half, holding a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

Less than five minutes into the second half, Pcholinsky netted her second goal of the match, and ultimately the game-deciding score, extending the lead to 3-0.

Akron continued to shut out the Eagles until the 59', when Eastern Michigan was finally able to crack the Zips' defense and score its first goal of the match, decreasing the deficit to 3-1.

The Eagles once again found the back of the net at the 76:14 mark of the second half, however the strong defense of the Zips was able to hold onto the lead for the remainder of the match, winning their second consecutive match, 3-2.

In the match, Akron totaled 13 shots, including 10 in the first half and three in the second stanza. Meaneypaced the Zips individually with a team-high seven shots (four on goal), while Pcholinskyhad two shots of her own, both of which resulted in goals.

Freshman keeper Libby Harper (Hatfield, England) earned four saves for the Zips.

Akron continues its final road trip of the 2019 regular-season and tour of the state of Michigan as the Zips head to Mount Pleasant, Mich. Akron takes on Central Michigan on Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Central Michigan Soccer/Lacrosse Complex with the first touch scheduled for 1 p.m.
