AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's swimming and diving team returns to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 1 p.m. as it travels to face Duquesne in its first dual of 2019. With the new year, the two teams look to add a unique twist to the standard dual meet format. The meet will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
In this non-traditional format, each team will have a preset line up. When the pre-selected swimmers are behind the blocks the scorers' table will draw out of a hat the mystery event to be contested. As the mystery event is announced (for example, the 400 IM), it will be the first time those swimmers will know what event they are competing in.
"Dave and I came up with this concept a few days ago and thought it would be an excellent challenge for our swimmers," said head coach Brian Peresie. "Our team is very excited, anxious and pumped for this meet. For me, it will be interesting to watch how the team tackles this challenge. I'm curious to see what we learn about ourselves through this experience. I have no idea what the outcome will ultimately be, but I am confident we will have a lot to talk about once the water goes calm."
This format is similar to a format two other teams competed with in October. The difference is on Saturday the swimmers will know when to be behind the blocks, but they will not know what they will be swimming until it has been announced. To be successful the swimmers will need to be able to quickly think through their race plan for the event drawn and give their best effort. Since scoring is the same as a normal dual meet, the team with the most individual versatility will most likely come out on top.
"We have to prepare much differently for this competition," Peresie said. "Most of the preparation will be with our mental game. This format is a whole new ball game"
Swimmers may compete in a maximum of four events. Either two relays and two individual events, or one relay and three individual events.
Order of Events
Event 1 – 1 Meter Diving
Event 2 – 3 Meter Diving
Event 3 – 200 Medley Relay
Events 4-12 – Mystery
Event 13 – 200 Free Relay
Events 14-21 – Mystery
Event 22 – 400 Medley Relay

Up next, the Zips will compete at the Shamrock Invite, Jan. 25-26, in Notre Dame, Ind., hosted by Notre Dame.
