NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Akron women's swimming and diving team turned in a strong performance on the final day of the Shamrock Invitational at Rolfs Aquatic Center in Notre Dame, Ind. The meet was highlighted by a record-breaking performance by Akron's 400 freestyle relay team.
Over the course of the two-day invitational, Akron won a total of six events. The Zips finished second behind tournament host, Notre Dame, who won the meet.
The Akron 400 freestyle relay team of freshman Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba), seniors Ragen Engel (Springfield, Ohio) and Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario) and freshman Sofia Henell (Linkoping, Sweden) certainly wrapped up the Shamrock Invitational on a high note. The team turned in a phenomenal time of 3:17.02. Their mark not only set a new pool record at Rolfs Aquatic Center, but also a new program and MAC best time. The time beat Akron's previous time of 3:17.17, which was set at the 2017 MAC Championships.
On the boards, freshman Kamryn Goodrick (Chesterland, Ohio) recorded an NCAA zone cut score of 270.65 in one-meter diving to place fifth overall. Senior Karly Crail (Edgewood, Ky.) placed ninth with a score of 251.60, while junior Katelyn Applin (Dansville, N.Y.) finished in tenth with a score of 251.50.
Junior Jessica Bonezzi (Wooster, Ohio) turned in a personal best time of 17:00.00 and was also Akron's top finisher, placing seventh, in the 1650 freestyle to begin the day. Bonezzi shaved nearly seven seconds off of her previous time and now ranks eighth on the Zips' top ten all-time list. Freshman McKenzie Rice (Liberty Township, Ohio) followed closely behind, finishing eighth with a time of 17:03.98.
In the 200 backstroke, freshmen Avery Movold (Prince George, British Columbia) (1:59.40) and Olivia Gardner (Bromsgrove, England) (1:59.66) placed fifth and sixth, respectively.
Junior Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio) was the runner-up in the 100 freestyle, turning in a time of 50.05. Akron also had swimmers place third, fourth and fifth in the event, including Fazekas (50.06), Engel (50.08) and Henell (50.15), respectively.
The Zips recorded fourth, fifth and sixth place finishers in the 200 breaststroke. Sophomore Ally Wharton (New Albany, Ohio) took fourth with a time of 2:17.74, while freshman Andrea Fischer (St. Paul, Minn.) placed fifth with 2:17.75 and junior Jackie Pash (Carmel, Ind.) touched the wall sixth in 2:18.47.
The 200 butterfly results closely reflected the outcome of the 100 butterfly raced the night before. Sophomore Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) won the event with a time of 1:57.91, while Watson placed second, turning in a time of 1:59.34. Bonezzi and junior Mackenzie Vargas (Roseville, Calif.) also picked up points for Akron in the event, finishing in sixth and eighth, respectively.
Up next, Akron is set to host back-to-back duals. The Zips take on Bowling Green, Thursday, Jan. 31, at 4 p.m. before wrapping up its regular season with Ohio on Friday, Feb. 1, at 5 p.m.
