Akron Swimming and Diving Breaks Pool Record on Day One of Shamrock Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Akron women's swimming and diving team got off to a fast start after day one of the Shamrock Invitational at Rolfs Aquatics Center in Notre Dame, Ind. The Zips broke a pool record and won four events. Additionally, seven Zips placed within the top three.
The Akron 'A' relay team of freshman Sofia Henell (Linkoping, Sweden), senior Ragen Engel (Springfield, Ohio), senior Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario) and freshman Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) earned the first victory of the day as they finished the 200 freestyle relay in 1:29.94. The time ranks fifth for Akron all-time, while Fazekas turned in an impressive 50-yard split of 22.02.
Fazekas swam a time of 4:48.94 in the 500 freestyle to take third. In the 200 individual medley, Watson took first with 2:00.55, while sophomore Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) came in third (2:02.11) followed by Henell (2:03.01).
Engle was the highest placing Zip in the 50 freestyle turning in a time of 23.13 to place sixth. Akron wrapped up the morning session with a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay. The Zips' 'A' relay entry of Fazekas, sophomore Paula Garcia (Madrid, Spain), Watson and Henell recorded a time of 3:39.18.
The team of Fazekas, freshman Lauren Cooper (Dublin, Ohio), junior Ellie Nebraska (Delaware, Ohio) and senior Emily Christophersen (Noblesville, Ind.) began the evening session with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay, touching in a time of 1:38.94.
Akron garnered sixth, seventh and eighth place in the 400 individual medley including, senior Emma King (Centerville, Ohio) (4:23.28), freshman Olivia Gardner (Bromsgrove, England) (4:23.46) and junior Jessica Bonezzi (Wooster, Ohio) (4:23.50), respectively.
Nogaj swam her fastest time this season while also setting a new pool record in the 100 butterfly, touching first in a time of 52.47. The previous school record was set at last years Shamrock Invite by Akron's Fazeaks (52.70). Watson followed closely behind, taking second with a time of 52.97.
In the 200 freestyle, freshman Avery Movold (Prince George, British Columbia) recorded a personal best time of 1:47.78 to finish second. Additionally, Nebraska placed fourth in the event with a time of 1:49.80 and Engle placed sixth in 1:50.01.
Freshman Andrea Fischer (St. Paul, Minn.) was the top point scorer for Akron in the 100 breaststroke, finishing eighth in 1:04.00, while junior Jackie Pash (Carmel, Ind.) added a time of 1:04.31 to take ninth.
In the final individual event of the day, the 100 backstroke, Fazekas won the event, turning in a time of 53.87.
In the 800 freestyle relay, the Akron lineup of Nogaj, Fazekas, Watson and Movold placed second with a time of 7:15.27.
In the three-meter diving event, senior Karly Crail (Edgewood, Ky.) was Akron's top diver, placing ninth with a score of 269.60. Additionally, junior Katelyn Applin (Dansville, N.Y.) and freshman Kamryn Goodrick (Chesterland, Ohio) came in 12th and 15th, respectively.
After one day of competition, Akron sits in second place, while tournament host, Notre Dame is in the lead.
The Shamrock Invitational concludes on Saturday, Jan. 26, with the final session beginning at 11 a.m.
