AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's golf team returns to action on Monday and Tuesday, Oct 1-2, hosting The Firestone Invitational at the par-72, 7,125-yard Firestone Country Club North Course.
Â
The 54-hole Firestone Invitational is scheduled to begin on Monday at 8:15 a.m. with a shotgun start and continuous play for 36 holes. Tuesday's final round is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. with split tee times on holes No. 1 & No. 10.

The 17-team field includes: host Akron, Illinois State, Ball State, Mount St. Mary's, Cleveland State, Ohio, Connecticut, Old Dominion, Dayton, South Carolina Aiken, Dartmouth, Temple, Eastern Michigan, William & Mary, Furman, Winthrop and Youngstown State.

The Zips' five-man roster includes senior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.), junior Mitchell McFarland(Wheelersburg, Ohio), sophomore  Fabian Sunden (Sweden), redshirt freshmen Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio) and freshman Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain). Also Joining Zips at the tournament and competing as individuals are junior Jacob Morgan (Lafayette, Ga.) and freshman Kaleb Smith (Mansfield, Ohio).

In 2017, Illinois State defeated Cincinnati by one stroke with an 859 (-5) after placing runner-up in 2016. Akron finished third overall in 2017 and 2016 with  at 875 (+11) and 856 (-8) scores.

Bearcat Austin Squires earned medalist honors for the second consecutive year with an 8-under par 208 two-day total following the 2016 performance of 205 (-11).
