ATHENS, Ohio – The University of Akron volleyball team dropped a three-set decision against the Ohio Bobcats (21-25, 14-25, 22-25) on Saturday evening at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio.
Akron fell to 8-7 over and 0-4 in Mid-American Conference action, while Ohio improved to 8-9, 3-1 MAC.
"We continue to do some really good things at a high level," said head coach Tom Hanna. "Finding the consistency in maintaining that high level is something we need to improve upon."
The Zips were led on offense for the second night in a row by senior Kayla Gwozdz (Temperance Mich.) with ten kills, while junior Elya Karsner (Frankfort, Ky.) followed with eight kills. Sophomore setter Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) recorded a double-double of 21 assists and 12 digs.
On defense, sophomore defensive specialist Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) led with 17 digs, while senior Abbey Pawlak (Sylvania, Ohio) added nine digs. Weigand and freshman Megan Kelly (Lakewood, Ill) recorded two blocks apiece for Akron.
Back to back kills from Richardson and Karsner gave the Zips an early 2-0 lead to start the match. However, the Bobcats would answer with a 4-0 run of their own to take the lead. Kills by Karsner and sophomore Shelby Fulmer (Perrysburg, Ohio) would cap off an Akron run to tie the set at 11-11. The teams would remain close in score over the next few rallies but eventually, a late run would give the Bobcats a 25-21 win in the opening set.
Kills from Kelly, Karsner and Fulmer contributed to a 4-3 advantage for Akron to begin set two. A 5-0 run would prove to be an early game changer to lead the Bobcats to a 25-14 second set win.
The Zips were behind 8-6 when consecutive kills from Gwozdz tied it at 8-all. Akron trailed 17-11 when a 9-4 run that saw six kills from six different Zips cut the deficit to just one point. The teams traded the next two points with a kill from Karsner making it 22-21. The Bobcats scored three of the final four points to take the final set, 25-22.
Up next, Akron returns home to take on Buffalo, Thursday, Oct. 4 and Toledo on Saturday, Oct. 6. First serve for both matches is set for 7 p.m.
