Zips Earn Straight Set Victory Over Buffalo at Home

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron volleyball team defeated the Buffalo Bulls in straight sets (25-13, 18-26, 25-23) on Thursday night at James A. Rhodes Arena.
Akron earned its first conference win of the season, improving to 9-7 overall and 1-4 in Mid-American Conference play. The Bulls fell to 10-7 overall and 2-3 in the MAC.
Akron's offense was led for the fourth-straight match by senior Kayla Gwozdz (Temperance, Mich.), who totaled 15 kills on the night. Junior Ashley Richardson (Doylestown, Ohio) and sophomore Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) added 10 and six kills, respectively.
Sophomore setter Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) proved why she is nationally ranked in service aces, adding five more tonight, bringing her season total to 36 service aces. Weigand also paced the Zips with 30 set assists.
Sophomore Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) directed the Zips' defensive efforts with 17 digs, while senior Abbey Pawlak (Sylvania, Ohio) added 10. Sophomore Shelby Fulmer (Perrysburg, Ohio), freshman Megan Kelly (Lakewood, Ill.) and Richardson each recorded two blocks for Akron.
As a team, Akron recorded a hitting percentage of .302 on the night compared to Buffalo at .180.
The Zips scored seven unanswered points to open up the match. The run consisted of two service aces by Adleta and a pair of kills from Kelly and Gwozdz. Buffalo inched its way back, only trailing 12-7, but another run highlighted by two Weigand service aces increased the Zips lead to 16-7. Akron would only build on its lead from there, taking the opening set, 25-13.
Akron held a 5-4 edge into the second when five-straight points increased its lead to 10-4. The Bulls were down 17-13 when a 6-1 run would give them their first lead of the match. The two teams would trade leads from there until Buffalo held a 26-25 advantage over the Zips. A kill by Adleta in addition to two Buffalo errors sealed a 28-26 second set win for Akron.
Buffalo only trailed 10-9 into the third when a 6-1 run by the Zips increased the difference to 16-10. The Bulls answered with seven back-to-back points of their own to take a 17-16 lead over Akron. The teams remained close in score for the remainder of the match. The Zips only held a 24-23 lead, but a kill by Gwozdz capped off the sweep with a 25-23 third set victory.
Akron remains home to take on Toledo on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. at James A. Rhodes Arena.
