AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's soccer team put forth a valiant effort in their showdown with Eastern Michigan (7-5-0, 2-1-0 MAC) at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field on Friday, Sept. 28, but the Zips (4-6-1, 1-2-0 MAC) were unable to earn the victory as a golden goal in the 97th minute (96:08) by Sabrina McNeill gave the Eagles a 1-0 triumph.
Senior Erica Schrader (Blacklick, Ohio) and sophomore Angela Boyce (Farmington Hills, Mich.) directed the Zips' attack with a team-high three shots apiece, while McNeill led Eastern Michigan with a game-high seven shots.
McNeill headed home the game-winning tally for the Eagles off a corner kick by Kristin Nason at the 96:08 mark.
The two sides waged a defensive battle in the opening stanza as the teams were limited to a combined three shots on goal en route to entering the intermission deadlocked in a scoreless contest.
Akron freshman goalkeeper Erin McKinney (Belvidere, Ill.) collected saves at the 36:44 and 43:21 marks, respectively, to deny scoring opportunities for the Eagles in the first half.
McNeil narrowly missed giving Eastern Michigan a 1-0 lead in the 66th minute (65:39) as her strike hit off the post.
At the 69:38 mark, freshman Carly Pcholinsky's (South Park, Pa.) shot was pulled in for a save by goalkeeper Kaylin Williams for the Eagles.
In the 79th minute (78:59), Boyce delivered a ball from approximately 30 yards out that came within inches of bending in for her first goal of the season. Unfortunately for Akron, the ball pinged off the post to thwart the scoring chance.
The Zips again benefited from fortuitous bounces in the 86th minute as McNeill's shot at the 85:06 mark hit the post before a header off the deflection by Parys Kerr sailed high.
Akron posted a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal in the second half.
In overtime, Boyce recorded shots at the 93:05 and 94:20 marks, respectively, both of which went wide.
McKinney finished the evening posting three saves for Akron, while Williams earned the shutout on the strength of three saves.
The Zips return to action on Sunday, Sept. 30, as Akron welcomes Central Michigan to FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field for a 1 p.m. tilt. The match will be broadcast on ESPN3.
