Akron’s Vasilescu to Participate in Oracle/ITA Masters

AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) will open her fall season at the 2018 Oracle/ITA Masters on Sept. 20-23.
The future stars of college tennis matches will be played at the Malibu Racquet Club and Pepperdine University. Admission is FREE.
Th national tournament features the rising stars of tennis– 32 of the top men's and women's singles players in the United States. These elite college tennis players will face off in singles and pair up in mixed doubles over the course of the weekend.
Vasilescu, who finished her freshman campaign ranked No. 14 Oracle/ITA Division I Rankings in the Midwest in singles play, will participate in the double elimination 32-player women's singles draw.
Vasilescu is seeded No. 27 and will face No. 6 seed Evgeniya Levashova of Pepperdine in the opening round on Thursday, Sept. 20, at 9:15 PT at Pepperdine.
Live scoring will be available through the Oracle ITA Masters website. Sunday's finals will be televised/streamed by ESPNU and ESPNWatch at 2:30 p.m. ET (11:39 a.m. PT).
"Miruna has a wonderful opportunity to play in this outstanding event, and we are excited to see her compete against such high-level competition," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "It has been an honor to have a player receive an invitation each of the past three seasons, which is a testament to the consistently high level of tennis that our players are able to produce."
Vasilescu, who finished her inaugural campaign with a 17-5 singles record including 5-3 in MAC play, was named the Mid-American Conference Women's Tennis Newcomer of the Year as well as a second-team All-MAC honoree. She opened her collegiate campaign with a perfect 8-0 record. Working her way up the line-up from No. 6 to No. 1, Vasilescu went 8-2 at No. 2 singles. She was named the MAC Singles Player of the Week twice (Jan. 31, March 28) and the Summa Health Student-Athlete of the Week (March 8). In doubles action, she went 2-0 at No. 1 with Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) and 2-0 at No. 2 doubles with senior captain Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas). Vasilescu was named the team's Most Valuable Player following the season.
The Zips open the 2018 fall season with their own Akron Shootout on Sept. 21-23 with Cleveland State, Louisville, and Youngstown State at the outdoor tennis courts on campus.
