Akron Volleyball Holds First Practice of 2018 Season

A CLOSER LOOK INTO PRESEASON CAMP | 2018 AKRON VOLLEYBALL SCHEDULE
AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron volleyball team officially began preparations for its 45th season of competition with its first preseason practice on Wednesday at James A. Rhodes Arena. The Zips are under the direction of fourth-year head coach Tom Hanna.
"It's great to have the team back on campus," said Hanna. "We had a solid spring and made some real strides, particularly offensively and in our accountability level on the court."
The Akron roster consists of 10 returners and five newcomers. Among the returners are seniors Abbey Pawlak (Sylvania, Ohio) and Kayla Gwozdz (Temperance, Mich.). Gwozdz was the leading hitter on the Zips' squad last year, tallying 290 kills. Three juniors and five sophomores complete the returners for the Zips.
Akron welcomes newcomers Jen Durra (Painesville, Ohio), Megan Kelly (Lakewood, Ill.), Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio), Mahogany Vinson (Richton Park, Ill.) and Hannah Yaconis (Batavia, Ill.) to the team.
"Now we get to add some new pieces that are very talented to the puzzle, which is exciting," said Hanna. "We've had a good start to preseason and look forward to making more progress over the next two weeks."
UA will host a preseason exhibition versus Cleveland State on Aug. 17 at 5 p.m. before traveling to California to open its season at the Titan Classic, Aug. 24-25, hosted by Cal State Fullerton.
Volleyball season tickets are just $40 for general admission. Discounted season tickets are available for current UA Faculty and Staff at $32. Single-game and group tickets are also now available for purchase.
Season tickets can be purchased online at GoZips.com/tickets, by calling 1-888-99-AKRON (25766), or at the C.P. and Cornelia S. Chima Athletics Ticket Office. The ticket office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
