The Zips closed out 2018 with a commanding 15-5 win over the Golden Flashes and sent the seniors Cassie Gillespie (Sylvania, Ohio) and Caitlin Gambone (Canton, Ohio) out on a high-note defeating their cross-town rivals one last time in their careers. When the final out was made on May 6, Akron ended the year with a 4-43-1 record in 2018.
2018 Zip BreakdownÂ
Under the guidance of 12th-year head coach, Julie Jones, the Zips completed the 42nd season of competition in 2018. Akron returned seven letterwinners from 2017 and welcomed seven newcomers to the squad, which included four transfers and three true freshmen.Â
In the 48 game season that spanned over the course of four months, Gillespie went on to have a career year at the plate and lead the Zips offense. The senior captain ended the season as the Zips top hitter in the lineup recording a career-high .306 batting average. Gillespie set a career-high not only in average, but in slugging percentage (.414), on-base percentage (.410), hits (34), home runs (3), RBI (16), walks (21), stolen bases (10), and tied a career-high in runs scored (13). After utilizing her redshirt season in 2017, redshirt freshman Sydney Jascoe (Commerce, Mich.), made an immediate impact in 2018 for the Zips.
